IRELAND ARRIVE HOME FROM EURO SCHOOLBOYS

Irish squad

Team Ireland arrived home from the European Schoolboy Championships in Valcea, Romania via Dublin Airport this morning.

The Boys in Green claimed ten medals at the tournament and maintained Irish boxing’s proud legacy of having won medals at every European Schoolboy Championships since the inaugural tournament in Rome 2003.

Families, clubs and friends gathered at Dublin Airport to give the squad a big welcome home.

Pat Ryan, President of the IABA, Fergal Carruth, IABA CEO, and Stephen Connolly, IABA National Registrar, attended today’s homecoming.

The IABA President hailed the performances of the young Irish squad against some of the top boxers in the world in eastern Europe and praised what he described as the immeasurable contribution of Ireland’s clubs and clubs coaches after another impressive international outing.

“The entire squad performed magnificently in Romania and represented Ireland with pride in a very competitive competition. Each and every one of the boys gave it absolutely everything and can be very proud of their performances,” said Irish team manager Peter O’Donnell.

Stephen McElhinney, Paddy Gallagher and Liam Brereton were working Ireland’s corner at the 15th edition of the European Schoolboy Championships in Valcea. Larry Durand was the Irish R&J in Romania.

Irish boxing has now won 89 medals at the European Schoolboys Championships this century and are within striking distance of the ton – 100 medals.
