Joe Ward
Joe Ward claimed his third European title in Kharkiv, Ukraine today after beating Russian light-heavy Muslim Gadzhimagomedov.
Ward has his hand raised in victory on a unanimous decision to claim his third European gold since 2011.
The judges handed Ward a 30-27,30-27.30-27, 29-28,29-28 victory after three tight rounds against the tall and rangy Dagestan orthodox.
The Rio 2016 Olympian punched the air with delight when the result was announced. Irish male boxing has now claimed eight gold medals from the last five European Championships since 2010. Ward has won three of those.
The Moate BC (Westmeath) southpaw won his first European gold in 2011, his second in 2015 and his third today. All at light-heavy.
Brendan Irvine and Kurt Walker were presented with their bronze medals today.
Ward, Irvine, Walker and Sean McComb qualified for the World Championships in Hamburg, Germany in the Ukraine this week.
Team Ireland are due to arrive home from the Ukraine at 10.50pm tomorrow evening via Dublin Airport (Terminal 1).
