Katie Taylor’s bid for a sixth successive world title ended on a very narrow split decision to France’s Estelle Mosselly in the lightweight semi-finals at the World Women’s Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan today.
The final scores read 40-36 to Taylor and 38-38, 38-38 at the end of four close rounds, but when it went back to the judges they opted for Mosselly on a 2-1 verdict.
Taylor won rounds one and three across the board, with Mosselly splitting the judges in her favour in the second and also taking two of the judges with her in the fourth.
Taylor will be taking home a bronze medal from Astana. She’s also qualified for the Rio Olympics from the tournament. Mosselly has also qualified for Rio.
Kelly Harrington booked her ticket in Friday’s light-welter final earlier today. Ireland will be taking home at least one silver and a bronze from Astana.
