LIFFEY CRANE HIRE ELITE CHAMPIONSHIP WEIGH-INS

All boxers weighed-in this morning and early afternoon ahead of the opening bell for the Liffey Crane National Elite Championships at the National Stadium tonight.

15 bouts will be decided on Day 1 of the flagship competition of Irish boxing.

The Crumlin BC is facing a hectic start to the tournament.

Eight boxers from the Dublin club are between the ropes in the first two days of competition.

Two-time Irish Olympian Phil Sutcliffe, the head coach at the Crumlin unit, reckons they’ll be flat out as they have three back-to-back quarter-finals this evening alone.

“Anyone could win with a bit of luck. I’m hoping to get three or four wins but I never count my chickens, anything could happen, he said.

Sutcliffe also likes the format of the Championships which will run this Friday, Saturday, Monday, and next Wednesday. The finals will be decided on this day week.

“When the lads are ready, it’s better like this. In the old days, you’d weigh in and have to wait around,” he added.

Christain Cekiso and Colm Murphy get proceedings underway in the feather class this evening.

Antrim welter Aidan Walsh, who asked plenty of questions of England’s current European Elite champion Pat McCormack at the World Elites this year – the Sunderland fighter edged a split decision –  meets Terry McEntee.

The winner advances to face Galway’s defending 69kg champion Kieran Molloy on Saturday.

Boxing begins at 7pm tonight.

The IABA is running the Elites twice this year in the lead up to the European qualifiers for Tokyo 2020 at the Copperbox Arena in London next March.
