Irish squad

Aaron McElligott got Ireland off to a winning start at the European Schoolboy Championships in Romania today.

The Cashen Vale BC ace scored a unanimous decision over Romania’s Samuel Florin-Cimpoesu in Valcea, McElligott dominating in all three rounds and almost forcing his opponent into a standing count with successive combinations close to the bell for the end of the fight.

McElligott, who will meet Yahor Simakov of Belarus in the last-eight, was the only Irish boxer in action today.

Patrick Sweeney, Shamie McDonagh, James Whelan and Danny McHugh are between the ropes tomorrow.

257 boxers representing 30 nations are competing in Romania.
