NATIONAL ELITE CHAMPIONSHIPS NOTICE

The National Men’s and Women’s Elite Championships will be run for a second time this year to facilitate Ireland’s boxers going into the European qualifiers for Tokyo 2020.

Dominic O’Rourke, President of the IABA, today confirmed that the second (2019) edition of the Championships is pencilled in for five days inclusive between Monday, November 18 and Friday, November 22 at the National Stadium in Dublin.

The European qualifiers for Tokyo 2020 will be hosted at an exact date and venue to be confirmed in London next February.

77 Olympic places – 50 for men and 27 for women – are up for grabs in the English capital.

There will be one final World qualifier for men and women at a date and venue to be confirmed in Japan early next summer.

286 boxers – 186 males and 100 females – will compete across eights weights for men and five for women at the 32nd Olympiad.

Six Tokyo 2020 places, four for males and two for females, go to the host nation and 8 Olympic invitation berths will be distributed through the Tripartite Commission, leaving 272 places to be claimed through the qualification process.
