Dervla Duffy
Eight quarter-finals and ten semi-finals will be decided at the National Elite Championships at Dublin’s National Stadium tomorrow night.
Ashley McCullough meets defending featherweight champion Dervla Duffy in the first of Friday’s last-four bouts.
An Albert Foundry BC stand out, McCullough is a niece of Barcelona 1992 Olympic silver medallist and ex-WBC World bantamweight champion Wayne “Pocket Rocket” McCullough, a multiple Irish Elite champion and Albert Foundry BC man.
Her dad, Alan,will be working her corner tomorrow evening and the former Irish and Ulster champion has vowed to leave it all in the ring in a weight class which could very well become one of the new Olympic limits for women.
“I’m fit strong and in the best shape I’ve ever been in my life,” said McCullough. “The road leading back here has been a tough one at times with training twice a day. but I knuckled down and gave it 100% and that’s exactly what I’ll be doing tomorrow night.”
Cork’s Tiegan Russell and Belfast’s Michaela Walsh meet in the corresponding women’s featherweight semi-final on Saturday.
Feather has been added to the three existing Olympic limits – fly, light and middle – for women for the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires later this year and could be included on the program for Tokyo 2020.

Ticket prices for this’s weekend’s quarter-finals and semi-finals at the National Elite Championships at Dublin’s National Stadium are €15 for adults and €5 for children (U/15).. Admission is payable at the door on Friday and Saturday evening.
