TOP Irish coach Michael Hawkins has advised young boxers to think carefully before switching codes.
“Kids have a dream, certainly. The pro game is a natural progression from the amateur scene and lots of boxers go on and do very well, so you have to respect that,” he told today’s Irish News.
The Holy Trinity BC seconds was speaking after helping to guide Caoimhin Hynes to the vacant Irish light-heavy title versus Brian Kennedy at the National Elite finals last Saturday at Dublin’s National Stadium.
“But, speaking in general terms, if you can’t win a senior title, you should be questioning whether you should go pro or not, added Hawkins.
“Ask yourself the question and be genuine with yourself. Think very carefully about it.
“It’s okay chasing a dream, but what type of a dream is it?
