IABA, through Education & Training Officer, Nikki Foley, is conducting a survey of all coaches, to pinpoint the kinds of workshops, seminars and learning opportunities that coaches would most value.
Every coach in your club is invited to take part – the survey is anonymous.
IABA will use the information to design and deliver the kind of development opportunities that coaches share will have the most impact for them in the clubhouse, and covers elements including technical/tactical, S&C, nutrition, mindset supports, periodization, session planning. Coaches are invited to include additional areas in which they feel education/training may benefit them.
IABA is sharing its Safeguarding learning calendar for 2025.
In 2024, IABA delivered 14 Safeguarding 1 basic awareness courses, online and in person, providing this vital learning to 207 coaches and club administrators. IABA also delivered two Safeguarding Two courses to 28 Club Children’s Officers.
In 2025, IABA plans to deliver 12 Safeguarding One courses, 4 Safeguarding Two courses and a minimum of 1 Safeguarding Three courses.
IABA is also open, on request, to providing Safeguarding One and/or Safeguarding Two learning in person, at a county board or provincial unit level. County Boards and Provinical Units who wish to commission in-person delivery of this learning are invited to make contact with IABA National Safeguarding Manager, Stephen Flynn, via stephen@iaba.ie
Safeguarding One
All adults – coaches, committee members & non-coaching volunteers – in every club who have contact with children are required to have undertaken Safeguarding 1.
In keeping with Sport Ireland best practice in Safeguarding training, workshops will be limited to 16 participants. In keeping with norms across the sporting community, the cost for this workshop is E20.
The aim of this workshop is to help the Club Children’s Officer to carry out their role and support the implementation of best practice in the club. Participants will also receive a Club Children’s Officer Action Planning document as part of the training.

A person appointed to the Designated Liaison Person position in a club must firstly complete the Safeguarding One Workshop and should complete the SG3 training. A club may appoint the same person to both the CCO and DLP positions however best practice advises that they are kept as separate roles.

Two time Olympic Champion, Kellie Harrington, has been nominated for the RTE Sportsperson of the Year award.
The Dublin boxer made history on August 6th at the Paris Olympic Games, when the Tokyo Olympics lightweight champion became the first Irish boxer to defend her title – she recorded a 4-1 split decision victory over China’s Wenlu Yang on centre court at the iconic Roland Garos Stadium.
Kellie is nominated alongside 11 other athletes, including boxers Katie Taylor and Anthony Cacace
The reigning RTÉ Sportsperson of the Year, Rhys McClenaghan, is nominated for the 2024 accolade after winning Ireland’s first ever Gymnastics Olympic Gold. Also nominated are Paris Olympic and Paralympic medalists Daniel Wiffen (Swimming, gold); Paul O’Donovan (Rowing, gold) and Katie-George Dunlevy (Para-Cycling, 2 silver medals), Paul Townend (Horse Racing); Shane O’Donnell (Hurling), Rhasidat Adeleke (Athletics), Ciara Mageean (Athletics) and Róisín Ní Ríain (Para-Swimming; silver and bronze).
Also nominated, in the RTE Young Sportsperson of the Year category are 2024 World and European Youth Champions, 66kg Kyla Doyle (Whitechurch BC, Dublin) and 92+kg Adam Olaniyan (Jobstown BC, Dublin)
Joanne Cantwell, Darragh Maloney and Jacqui Hurley will present the awards ceremony from Studio 4 in RTÉ on Sunday, 15 December, with the action broadcast live on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player from 9.30pm.
Sunday was an historic day, as County Antrim Boxing IABA, through the Belfast City Council Boxing strategy and its Female Development Squad initiative hosted the first ever all female event in the province.
18 top quality exhibitions with all female boxers, coaches, officials medical staff & presenters.
This is hopefully the first in a long line of all female events from this development squad.
Double Olympian and 3 times commonwealth games medalist and current history-maker in her own right 12 time Irish Elite champion Michaela Walsh bestowed all medals.
Cllr Ruth Brooks Chair of the People & Communities committee and Disability Working Group Belfast City Council was on hand to make presentations. She presented Kelly Sloan City of Belfast Boxing Academy with her IABA Fundemantals of Boxing coaching certificate. Kelly being the first wheel chair user in the city to complete her fundamentals.
Other recipients of their fundamentals coaching were Under 22 European Silver Medalist Carleigh Irving (Oakleaf BC) & Irish elite finalist Zoe Mc Caughran (Evolution)
County Antrim President Patrick Barnes Senior awarded two services to County Antrim boxing & women in sport awards to Kate Meli (Immaculata BC) and Anne Murphy (Banbridge BC).
A huge thanks goes to the County Antrim Female Development committee and our Workforce Development Officer for organising today’s historic event and we wish them well in their future events. Squad training for this group as ever takes place in midland boxing club and will return in the new year.
