Team Ireland team to contest the 2024 World Youth Championships named

The 8 strong team to box for Ireland at the 2024 World Youth Championships has been named. The team includes World Junior Boxing Champion Siofra Lawless, European Junior Champion, Tadgh O’Donnell and 2024 European Youth medalists Ryan Jenkins and champions, Kyla Doyle Byrne and Adam Olaniyan.

The tournament is the pinnacle of competition for boxers of this age group. Boxers from 88 national federation will represent their countries at the tournament, which is being hosted by the Montenegro Boxing Federation in Budva, from October 20th to November 6th. The draw is expected to take place on October 22nd. The IBA is expected to live-stream the tournament on its YouTube channel.

The team departs for Budva on October 20th, after a weeks-long training bloc. Part of the preparation for the Team Ireland team has been training at Abbotstown, hosted in the High Performance Unit.

This is a biannual tournament and was last contested by Ireland in La Nucia, Spain, in November 2022. Ireland returned with 6 medals: Gold for 81kg Cliona D’Arcy and light heavy, Team Co-Captain Dearbhla Tinnelly, Lightweight Lee McEvoy, light middle Laura Moran and Team Co-Captain, welter Jim Donovan all came home with bronze medals.

Registration will be required to attend the AGM:

  1. Eligibility: All clubs successfully affiliated for the 2024/2025 season
  2. Attendees: Eligible clubs may nominate any two adult members to attend as delegates – one to be a voting delegate, one to be a non-voting delegate. Delegates nominated by clubs must verified members – this means they must be included in the club’s affiliation application, through Blocworx, for the 2024/2025 season as members and be over the age of 18. *Please note, delegates will be required to present photographic identification (passport, drivers’ licence, etc) on the day of the EGM.

Ryan progresses to European U22 Championship quarter finals.

57kg Gavin Ryan is one win away from a European U22 Championship podium finish.

The Ratoath Golden Gloves boxer was between the ropes in Bulgaria for the second successive day today. He contested against Macedonia’s Alen Rustemovski and turned in another decisive performance. He claimed the 5-0 win on a score line of 27:30; 27:30; 27:30; 27:30; 27:30.

327 boxers from 36 federations are contesting the tournament -Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, England, Estonia, France, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, IBA Neutral N, IBA Neutral B, Ireland, Israel, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine and Wales.  October 18th is a rest day, and finals will be boxed across October 19th and 20th.

Also in action today, and making her debut, was 63kg Linda Desmond, who took on Turkey’s Esmanur. Linda, of Rylane Boxing Club, contested strongly and claimed the first round 3-2. However, the decision was 4-1 in favour of her opponent. Judges scored the bout: 30:27; 29:28; 29:28; 29:28; 29:28; 28:29.

A very difficult day at the office for 67kg Luke Hall, who contested against Bulgaria’s Rumen Rumenov in a very close, testy bout in which points were deducted from both boxers. The 3-2 decision went to the home boxer. The final scores were: 29:26; 29:26; 28:27; 27:28; 27:28

75kg Josh Olaniyan takes on former World and European medalist, Ukraine’s Dzhamal Kuliiev. The Jobstown boxer performed well against an experienced opponent. The Ukrainian’s hand was raised on declaration of a unanimous decision. Judges scored the bout 27:30; 27:30; 27:30; 27:30; 27:30.

Day Three

Four Team Ireland boxers are in the ring in Sofia on Monday.

In Bout 2 of Ring A’s Afternoon Session, 63.5kg Roy Colgan opens his campaign against Juraj Bona of Slovakia. Over in Ring B in the same session, 71kg Bobbi Flood returns for his second bout, and takes on Mohammad Issa of Israel in Bout 8. Three bouts later (11), 80kg James Whelan is also back in the ring for the second time. He contests against Croatia’s Antonio Grabic.

In Bout 8 of Ring B’s Evening Session, 86kg Kian Hedderman boxes Georgia’s Giorgii Gutsaev.

Ireland recorded three wins from three bouts on the opening day of the 2024 European U22 Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria.

327 boxers from 36 federations are contesting the tournament -Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, England, Estonia, France, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, IBA Neutral N, IBA Neutral B, Ireland, Israel, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine and Wales.  October 18th is a rest day, and finals will be boxed across October 19th and 20th.

First up was 57kg Gavin Ryan, who took on Romania’s Iulian Eusebiu Tirzoman in Bout 4 of Ring B’s afternoon session. Gavin utterly dominated his opponent and came away with a 5-0 win on a score line of 30:27; 30:27; 30:27; 30:27; 30:25. Five bouts later (Bout 9), 71kg Bobbi Flood made his U22 debut against Turkey’s Cem Kaya. Bobbi was as decisive as his teammate, claiming a UD. The Judges scored the bout 27:30; 27:30; 27:30; 27:30; 27:30. Bobbi is back in the ring on Monday, for his Last 16 contest. In the Evening Session, 80kg James Whelan also faced Turkish opposition. He contested against Barsican Polat in Ring A’s Bout 10 and brought home Ireland’s third 5-0 decision of the day, on a score line of 27:30; 27:30; 27:30; 27:30; 27:30. James boxes his Last 16 contest on Tuesday.

The tournament’s Opening Ceremony took place today, and Ireland’s Flag Bearers were 57kg Niamh Fay and 92+kg Martin McDonagh.

Day Two

Four Team Ireland boxers open their campaigns on Day Two.

First up is 63kg Linda Desmond, who takes on Turkey’s Esmanur Lok in Bout 5 of Ring b’s Afternoon Session.
