10 Ireland boxers in action on the opening day of the European Junior Championships.

The Ireland campaign at the 2024 European Championships will open on Sunday.

The draws have taken place in Sarajevo today, and 370 boxers will contest. 28 federations, in all, are competing at the tournament: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, England, Estonia, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Turkey.

IABA last contested this tournament in 2022 and returned with a massive haul of ten medals: 2 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze. Ava Henry (Docklands) and Tadhg O’Donnell (Four Kings) claimed gold; silvers were won by Grace Conway Dowling (Tredagh), Niamh Keogh (Olympic L), Mary McDonagh (Sliabh Luachra) and Jamie Collins (Drimnagh). Bronze medalists were Alfie Jordan (Olympic L), John Harty (Portlaoise), Cillian Reilly Lennon (Jobstown) and Sophie Curley Gray (Dealgan)

A very busy opening day for Team Ireland, with 10 of the 25 strong team between the ropes. 46kg Abby Molloy, Sacred Heart, Dublin is the first Ireland boxer in action in the championships. She takes on Romania, opening bout in Ring A. 57kg Joseph Mihai, of Crumlin BC, is in action against England in Bout 6 of the same ring and session. 5 bouts later, in Bout 11, 66kg John Donoghue, Olympic L, get his campaign underway against Russia. 63kg Edward Harty, Portlaoise, also faces Russia opposition in Bout 7.

48kg Isabel Nolan, Santry opens proceedings in Ring A’s Evening Session, taking on Turkey in Bout 1. 54kg Molly Doyle, Templemore takes on Poland in Bout 7, while in Ring B, 50kg Paige Nickles, Banbridge meets Greece in Bout 4. In the subsequent bout, 52kg Mary Ann Furlong, Na Fianna, opens her account against Scotland. In Bout 9, 57kg Kayleigh Byrne, Gorey, contests against Italy.  60kg Sarah McTiernan, Drumsna will meet Turkish opposition in Bout 11.

Phase Two: IABA Rules Consultation

A draft Rulebook is bring presented for consultation. This is the second round of consultation on the Rulebook. The existing rulebook, adopted in 2019, is available here

The first consultation period through rules@iaba.ie, open to all members of all clubs and units, took place between 21st November and 21st December 2023.

The Rules Committee would like to extend its thanks to Dom Robinson of South East BC & Wexford County Board; Ken Moore of St. Francis BC; James Reynolds of East Down ABC, John King, Ronan Malone of Defence Forces, Gerard Fleming of Neilstown BC, and Andrew Duncan of Rochfortbridge BC for their significant contributions to this process.

The attached draft follows a review conducted by the of the 2019 rulebook, and rulebooks in 2006 and 2017, and a benchmarking of rules against international best practice.

A draft rulebook is now available, and attached. Clubs, Club Members, County Boards, Provincial Units are invited to share their views on this draft to rules@iaba.ie, by 5pm on Friday, July 19th. Once that process is completed, all proposals will be reviewed by the Rules Committee for assessment and inclusion.

Work is continuing on the IABA’s Competition and Technical Rules, which will sit alongside the Rulebook, and communication on this will take place in due course.

Coach Education Pathway

  1. Fundamentals of Coaching Boxing Assistant Coach – This course is for those wishing to begin their coaching career and gain an excellent grounding in fundamental technical aspects of boxing. Assistant coaches may sit at second corner in championship bouts.
  2. Level 1 Club Coach – This course provides the minimum certification required for coaches to act as first corner in championship bouts and provides the technical grounding to enable coaches to bring boxers to competition.
  3. Level 2 Performance Coach – This course provides advanced technical skills and coaching techniques to Level 1 qualified coaches.

As provision of coaching course is dependent on the availability of Coach Tutors, the calendar will be up-dated as availability is confirmed.

Entries:                                  A non–refundable entry fee of €30 applies, including in the event of a boxer withdrawal.  Online entry, via the Blocworx portal, is open until 5pm, sharp, on Friday, July 5th . Entries will not be accepted without the payment of entry fees. All fees must be paid by 5pm on July 5th. Only boxers for whom entries have been completed and entry fees have been received will be allowed box.

Entry Form:                          Affiliated clubs wishing to enter boxers into the championships must log-in to their Blocworx portal, using their unique username and password. As the U22 National Championships form a basis for team selection to international competition, please be aware that all boxers entering this competition must: (1) be members of an IABA affiliated club, (2) must be explicitly named in their club’s Blocworx portal, (3) be eligible to represent IABA under IBA eligibility regulations {4.2}, holding an applicable in-date passport, (4) boxers must have completed the applicable waiver/code of conduct process

No international competition kits to be worn by any boxers; boxers may wear club kit, only.

Draws:                                    Tuesday, 09th July, 1pm in the National Stadium.

Only boxers entered through the Blocworx portal for whom fees are fully paid will be included in the draw.

Attention is drawn to the following IABA rule –

A club shall not include in its list of members the name of any person who is a member of any other club.

Accordingly, any club making an entry to the U22 championships affirms that the entrant is not a member of any other club, in any jurisdiction.

Weigh-in and Medical:        Boxers will weigh in each day they box. Individual weigh-in times may be given to participants, but this will be decided and made known prior to the event. A medical will be performed on every boxer on Tuesday 09th July from 8am to 12pm at the National Stadium.

Waiver & Code of Conduct:

It is a condition of entry/participation that entrants completed the online Waiver/Code of Conduct process.

It is a condition of participation that all officials have completed the Waiver/Members acknowledgement form adhere to any agreement made with the Association sponsors.

Anti-Doping may be carried out at any stage of the championships and all boxers must advise the doctor of any medication they are taking or have taken in the preceding 4 weeks. It is imperative that all boxers adhere to the Anti-Doping Rules and Regulations. For any queries regarding this matter, boxers/coaches should contact Mr Larry Morrison, IBA Anti-Doping Officer on 086-0292476.

Non Pregnancy Declaration forms must be signed.

Attire: Boxers shall have one red and one blue vest. In accordance the IBA Technical and Competition Rule 48.7, boxers may wear form-fitting arm and/or leg coverings. Hair must be tied back and swimming hats or hairnets should be worn under the headgear for boxers with long hair. No red, orange or pink gum shields are allowed A Boxer can have a beard and moustache, but either must not cover the neck and must not be longer that 10cms, in accordance with the IBA Technical and Competition Rule 4.2.5.2.2

Coaches: They must wear track suitsandrunners at all sessions and endeavour to set a high standard of hygiene in the corners. No shorts, caps or hats are allowed. Only qualified coaches permitted in corners.

Sportsmanship: All decisions must be accepted in a sporting manner. Any complaints must be addressed to the Chief Official, Mr. Philip Rooney. Please show respect to all Ringside Officials. A document stipulating requirements in relation to conduct and the use of social media must be signed by all boxers and coaches at their initial weigh-in.

Please note: 

  • The U22 Championship will be run under IBA Technical & Competition rules, as adopted on September 1st, 2022.  
  • Referee & Judges for the U22 Championships will not be allowed enter the field of play as a coach with their club boxer.
  • All Referee & Judges must bring their record books.

Entries open: 2024 Emerald Box Cup.

Entries are now open for the 2024 Emerald Box Cup, which is a nationally-calendared tournament. The competition, now in it’s second year, is co-founded and jointly operated by Westside Boxing Club, Tallaght and Curadh Boxing Club, Wicklow

The tournament will take place at Tallaght Leisure Centre, Fortunestown Way, Tallaght, Dublin, D24 KX38, on August 23rd, 24th and 25th.

Boxing will begin at 11am on each day. Weigh-ins will be held at Westside Boxing Club, Brookview Avenue, Tallaght, Dublin D24 DP80 from 6pm to 9pm on August 22nd.

The entry fees are €30 per boxer and €10 per coach. A maximum of 3 coaches per team is accepted.
