Boxing in the 2024 National U18 Championship continued at the National Stadium today – 21 semi finals were decided. Today’s card was also live-streamed, with partners StreamSport.ie and JW Player.

Siofra Lawless nominated for HerSport award.

World Junior Champion, Siofra Lawless, has been nominated for the HerSport Personality of the Year award.

On December 4th, 63kg Siofra of Four Kings BC in Kilcoole County Wicklow, contested her final against India’s Sachin Shurshti Sathe on the second day of finals. Siofra displayed excellent punch-picking, and ringcraft, and was dominate throughout, winning all rounds. Judges from Serbia, Zimbabwe, Kyrgyzstan, Spain and Uzbekistan scored the bout, which included a last round standing count: 26:30, 26:30, 27:30, 26:30, 27:30. Siofra was named Best Female Boxer of the World Junior Championships.

Siofra is nominated for the award alongside 9 other women, including highly decorated 100 metre hurdler, Sarah Lavin, Olympian – sailor Annalise Murphy, Mary Hickey-Nolan, Olympian and hockey player Nicci Daly, MMA champion, Shauna Bannon, Ruesha Little-John, Fionnuala McCormack, Amelia McFarland and Hannah Tyrell

Applications open: Sport Ireland Energy Grant.

Sport Ireland is opening Phase Three of its Sport Energy Support Scheme to boxing clubs, and applications can be made here

The deadline for applications is January 31st. Clubs which applied to the scheme in 2022, are welcome and eligible to apply for Phase Three support.

This funding is designed to support boxing clubs with rising energy costs associated with operation

  • Increased costs between Sept 1st 2019 and July 31st 2020 vs Sep 1st 2022 to July 31st 2023
  • The Scheme is aimed at supporting Clubs in the Republic of Ireland only
  • This Scheme is aimed at covering the difference in energy costs during the above period – – so, if a bill in the period Sept 1st 2019 and July 31st 2020 was E100, and the same bill in the period Sep 1st 2022 to July 31st 2023 was E150, the eligible cost is E50.
  • Clubs applying for support must be able to demonstrate payment of these costs.
  • If your energy costs are included in your expenses (e.g. rent), you will need to demonstrate these costs separately
  • Eligibility is based on proof of payment
  • The scheme is subject to Sport Ireland audit
  • Deadline for submission January 31st 2024

Please note that:

  • General cost of living increases including increased costs in accommodation, rent, rates or labour costs are not eligible.
  • As per Government direction, fuel costs associated with machinery, vehicles, travel or transport do not qualify.
  • Non-Energy related increases or pre-existing debts or deficits are also ineligible.

Scheme Guidelines

Team to contest the 75th Strandja Memorial Tournament named.

A 14 strong team has been named to contest the 75th Strandja Memorial Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria, next month.

The team includes all Team Ireland athletes currently qualified for Paris 2024 – Jack Marley (92kg), Dean Clancy (63.5kg), Amy Broadhurst (66kg), Michaela Walsh (57kg) and reigning lightweight champion, Kellie Harrington.

Rounding out the team are Elite High Performance Athletes 50kg Shannon Sweeney, 54kg Niamh Fay, 2022 World Champions Amy Broadhurst and Lisa O’Rourke, along with 51kg Rickey Nesbitt, 57kg Adam Hession, 57kg Dylan Eagleson, 71kg Eugene McKeever, 71kg Dean Walsh, and 92+kg Martin McDonagh.

At the 74th edition of the tournament, IABA boxers returned with 3 gold, for Kellie Harrington, Aoife O’Rourke and Tina Desmond, and one bronze for Kelyn Cassidy.

High Performance Head Coach, Zauri Antia says “Strandja is a very tough tournament – last year, 38 nations competed there and we performed very strongly. This is an equally strong team, preparing to go up against some of the best boxers in the world.”

High Performance Director, Tricia Heberle, says “Strandja is a world-renowned tournament and one at which IABA has a history of contesting strongly. This is a dual focus competition – for our athletes already qualified for Paris, this is a key preparation event. For the Paris 2024 Olympic Training Squad, this is a vital development and preparation opportunity, where they will meet some of the highest-level international athletes. The preparation for this team, supported by Sport Ireland and Sport Science practitioners at Sport Institute Ireland, has been excellent, and has included a Heat Acclimatisation Camp in Tenerife, and training at the Ulster High Performance Unit, at the University of Ulster Jordanstown, as well as at our base in SII.”
