Work in Boxing: Key Governance role – Company Secretary.

Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) is looking for a Company Secretary to provide high quality, professional company secretarial services and promote good corporate governance.

This position assists in the efficient administration of the Association’s Governing Structure; ensuring Members are fully informed of legal and corporate responsibilities and ensuring full compliance with statutory regulations and corporate governance.

Key Responsibilities

Company Secretarial

  1. Responsibility in the organisation and administration of meetings for the Board of Directors and selected Committees. including agenda and all meeting preparation, circulation of papers, organisation of meetings and follow up to include minutes of the meetings.
  2. Maintaining action logs arising out of meetings and driving completion of actions.
  3. Manage electronic board paper software, including liaison with software provider.

4. Arranging and co-ordinating the election process for the IABA’s governing structure.

5. Oversight of statutory requirements, By-Laws, corporate governance, legal regulations and requirements. Input into the management of change to By-Laws and internal corporate governance where required.

6. Advising on corporate governance best practice and making recommendations.

7.   Manage the development and induction programme for the Board, Central Council and other relevant committees under the direction of the chair.

8. Ensuring compliance with legislation such as the Companies Act, Sports Governance Code, Protected Disclosures Act etc.

9. Act as point of contact to co-ordinate all Governance compliance reporting and Data Protection (DP) requests and ensure that statutory obligations, timelines etc. are adhered to.

10. Participate in any other IABA projects, events or activities as directed.

Qualifications

•    Third level qualification in a relevant discipline

•    Member of the ICSA (Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators) desirable.

Experience

•    A minimum of 3 years’ experience working in company secretarial or similar

•    Knowledge of relevant legal and regulatory requirements, and corporate    governance best practice.

•    Ability to design and implement new ways of working, based on company secretarial and corporate governance best practice.

•    Ability to work independently, under pressure and to tight deadlines, managing competing priorities.

•    Able to deliver quality written reports or minutes with excellent attention to detail.

•     Ability to take ownership and drive projects forward.

Boxing clubs are being invited to nominate their members for the Federation of Irish Sport’s 2023 Volunteers in Sports Awards.

The accolades recognise the unsung heroes who breathe life into sports in every corner of the country. Supported by the National Network of 29 Local Sports Partnerships, these dedicated volunteers are the backbone of sporting communities, and it’s time to celebrate their unwavering commitment.

Nominations for the awards are now open, and you can submit your entries at the dedicated awards website, www.volunteersinsport.ie. Under the banner of #DedicatedToTheDedicated, these awards are more than just a ceremony; they are a celebration of the remarkable individuals who pour their hearts into sports in every county across Ireland.

The 2023 awards will culminate in a spectacular in-person awards ceremony, scheduled to take place on Thursday 29th February 2024. Nominations opened today Monday, November 13th, and the window for entries will close on Monday December 18th, 2023. The nominations received will be meticulously shortlisted and thoughtfully considered by our Judging Panel. This prestigious event will see 32 county awards presented, and one exceptional individual will be crowned with the coveted Outstanding Volunteer Award.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of sporting activities in clubs and communities nationwide. They generously invest their time, energy, and passion, dedicating themselves to the development of their chosen sport. Over 450,000 dedicated volunteers are needed on a weekly basis to fuel club activities. Their collective efforts translate into an astonishing estimated economic value of €1.5 billion, showcasing the immeasurable impact of their contributions. Without these volunteers, the very existence of sports clubs would hang in the balance.

There were two winners from Boxing in 2022 – Churchlands Golden Gloves BC’s Micky Fleming and Carmel O’Neill of Paulstown BC Kilkenny

Work in Boxing: High Performance Finance & Administration Officer.

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) is wishing to recruit a part-time Finance and Administration Officer with the successful candidate to work in the High Performance Unit (HPU) at the Sport Ireland Institute in Abbotstown, Dublin.

Boxing is Ireland’s most successful Olympic sport with a rich history of medal winning performances across multiple Games. The HPU provides a world class daily training environment for Ireland’s best boxers.  It is a crucial part of the overall IABA approach to high performance development and sustainable world class performances on an international stage.

This is a great opportunity for a suitably qualified accounting technician to provide expertise in a key area that supports the Irish National Boxing program.  This exciting role will require a multi-tasker who has strong accounting skills and book-keeping experience, effective planning and communication skills, proficient computer literacy and a willingness to take on a range of administrative tasks to support key staff and athletes within the HPU.

Location

IABA High Performance Unit (HPU) at the Sport Ireland Institute, Sport Ireland National Sports Campus in Abbotstown, Dublin.

Hours of Work

3 days / 24 hours per week, with flexible scheduling of hours.

Salary Range

Pro-rata €35,000 per annum but subject to qualifications and experience.

Line Management

Reports to the National Performance Director and works closely with the High Performance Unit Manager (HPUM).

Essential Skills and Qualifications

This role is multifaceted and offers a great scope of work.

  • Experience in general book-keeping ATI (Accounting Technicians) qualification of similar is desirable.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years experience in a similar role
  • Competent in use of Microsoft office
  • Advanced planning and good administrative skills
  • Task oriented and able to work both independently and under direction
  • Competent English language skills and good communicator

Desirable Skills

  • Understanding of Boxing as an Olympic and international sport
  • Previous experience working in a similar role in a fast-paced high performance sport environment

Paris Olympics: additional tickets released.

The International Olympic Committee has released 400,000 additional tickets for the Paris Games.

5 boxers have already qualified for the games – Tokyo Olympic lightweight champ, Kellie Harrington, Olympians Michaela Walsh (57kg) and Aoife O’Rourke (75kg), along with Dean Clancy (63.5kg) and Jack Marley (92kg).

Team Ireland boxers will have two more chances to qualify to contest the Games. Globally, a total of 50 athletes will qualify through the 1st World Qualification Tournament, including 22 women and 28 men. This will be held in Busto Arzizio, Italy from 29 February to 12 March 2024.

Between 45 and 51 athletes (20-23 women and 25-28 men) will qualify through the 2nd World Qualification Tournament, which is scheduled for the Thai capital Bangkok from 23 May to 3 June 2024.

Team Ireland’s John Donoghue crowned World Junior Champion.

John Donoghue, of Olympic BC Mullingar, has been crowned a World Junior Champion following a thrilling final against Uzbekistan’s Khikmatillo Ulmasov in Yerevan, Armenia, this afternoon.

This was the 15 year old 63kg boxer’s 5th bout of the tournament. The first round was a 3-2 split, in favour of Donoghue. The second round was a 4-1 split in favour of the boxer in blue, which mirrored the final result. The judges, from Armenia, Serbia, India, Tunisia and Kyrgyzstan, scored the bout: 29:28; 27:30, 28:29; 27:30; 27: 30.

63kg Siofra Lawless is preparing to contest her World Junior Championships final. She will meet India’s Sachin Shurshti Sathe on the second day of finals, on Monday. Boxing will begin at 11am, Irish time, and Siofra’s final is bout 8.

Team Ireland has a third medalist, in 70Kg Mary McDonagh, of Kerry’s Sliabh Luachra BC. She boxed her semi-final against India’s Akansh Phalaswal. The unanimous decision went to the Indian athlete, on a scoreline of 27:30; 27:30; 28:29; 27:30; 27:30 – and Mary will return home with World bronze.
345 boxers from 51 countries are contesting the tournament, the first of its kind in 8 years. 11 of those boxers are Team Ireland athletes.
