IABA mourns the passing of Coach, Jim Moore.

Jim was a decades long presence in Arklow Boxing Club, Wicklow County Board and was a pivotal figure as High Performance Youth and Juniors Head Coach, and was a driving force behind podium finishes at World youth and junior championships as well as European youths and junior championships up to 2010 – including at the inaugural Youth Olympics at which Ryan Burnett won gold.

In 2001, he was awarded the presitigous ESB Coach of the Year Award, having been nominated by IABA and Wicklow County Board after the world championships in Belfast in the same year.

 A boxer from Cadet age himself with multiple titles, Jim also contributed significantly to the development of coaching throughout the IABA, as a Coach Tutor, delivering learning to club members taking the first steps in their coaching careers.

Arklow Boxing Club says ” End of an era for Arklow Boxing Club. Jim Moore founder member, Head coach,Co Board chairman and club chairman passed away today.Jim was well known and respected by the boxing fraternity, at local, provincial, national and international level. Jim founded the club with Mick Morgan 50years ago. Jim, for 7 years, worked on the newly formed high performance unit along with Billy Walsh, Zaur anthia and Gary keegan. He visited European countries taking all the best bits and developed a system the envy of other nations. Jackie Manley, pat mythen and Martin Wolohan kept the club going for that 7 years. Jim returned to the club and continued where he left off. Jim travelled all over Europe with Irish teams and was the proudest man in Ireland when his son James won a bronze medal in the world championships in Belfast.James turned Pro and had over 20 fights winning most of them. He now resides in NY. Jim’s daughter is highly involved in the club as secretary and coach and with the other coaches are doing great work to keep things going. Jim passed away in St vincents with his family by his side in the early hours of this morning. Jim’s funeral is sure to be a big one with so many he coached boxing to down the years. Deepest condolences to Mary Owen James and Linda and the extended family.”

IABA President, Anto Donnelly says “Jim was an excellent coach, and a good man held in high regard throughout the Assoication – his contribution to boxing at club, national and international level was significant and speaks for itself. As important, but perhaps not as visibile, was his contribution to the next generation of coaches, ensuring high technical standards and boxer-centred coaching. IABA extends our deepest condolences to his family, his club and his many friends. May he rest in peace.”

Olympian and World medalist at Junior, Youth and Senior level Joe Ward says “Recieved very sad news this morning Jim Moore sadly passed away, Jim was a lovely person and was a great boxing man did so much for Irish boxing and his boxing club I had some great memories with jim one of the all time greatest boxing coaches RIP Jim 🙏

Jim is survived by wife Mary, children Owen, James, Linda & the late Paul & sister Junie, Charlotte & the late Elizabeth & Marie, his son-in-law Mick, daughters-in-law Gillian & Leanne, grandchildren Liam, Owen, Paul, Amy, Ryan, Dylan, James & Finn, sisters, brother-in-law Jackie, nephews, nieces, relatives & his many friends from Arklow Boxing Club & beyond.

Funeral Arrangements

Reposing at Sweeney’s Funeral Home from 4pm until 8pm on Wednesday.

House private on Thursday when Jim will spend his last day in the home he loved. Removal from his residence on Friday morning at 9.15 to St. Mary & Peter’s Church arriving for Requiem Mass at 10 o’clock.

Those who cannot attend are welcome to join via webcam;

Funeral afterwards to St. Gabriel’s Cemetery, walking via the Wexford Road.

Team Ireland have notched up 2 more medals, and four wins at the European U15 Championships in Montenegro.

Team Ireland’s 42kg Ronan Charles has won at least a bronze medal, following his dominant 5-0 quarter final win over Latvia’s Denis Haschenk. Judges scored the bout 26:30; 26:30; 25:30; 26:30; 24:30; Ronan is back in action on Friday, boxing for a place in the finals against Romana’s Rusu Ioan Auras Cantar

Team Ireland’s 44kg Pa Casey is assured of a bronze, at minimum, following his 5-0 Last 16 win over Poland’s Dominik Drewnowski. The final scores were: 28:29; 27:30; 28:29; 27:30; 28:29.Pa will box for a place in the finals on Thursday, against England’s Thomas Catanach

52kg Patrick Hourican is through to the quarter finals of the European U15 Championships, following a 4-1 split decision win over Martin Aron Homai of Hungary in his Last 16 bout. Judges scored the bout 30:27; 28:29; 28:29; 27:30; 27:30. Patrick is back in action, boxing for a medal, on Wednesday.

57kg Kieran McDonagh has won through to the quarter finals with a 5-0 victory over Israel’s Mokbel Kadry. Judges scored the bout 28:29; 27:30; 28:29; 27:30; 28:29. Kieran boxes his semi final on Wednesday, against Turkey’s Akdamar Vesim Varcin.

66kg Eddie Sweeney exits the European U15 Championship on the narrowest of margins: a 3-2 split. He contested his Last 16 bout against Tadeas Jasek of Czech Republic. In this close contest, the decision went to the Czech boxer.

369 boxers including 131 girls and 138 boys from 32 nations are competing in this record-breaking European U15 Boxing Championships. That’s Bout 3 of the Afternoon Session. 42kg Rosaletta Casey, Portlaoise BC, Loais also has a bye, and will box Poland’s Alicja Laniecka in Bout 6 of the same session. 46kg Kenia Flood Prado takes on Poland’s Amelia Joachimska in Bout 12. Three bouts later, in Bout 15, 48kg Macie Duffy O’Connor meets Yagmur Çoskun of Turkey.

44kg Ava Harford, Phoenix of Ballyboughal BC, Dublin begins her campaign at quarter final stage in a weight of 8 boxers. Additional amendments have been made to the revised Garda Vetting process originally shared on July 30th last. The up-dated form is available here.

To assist clubs in adapting to, and managing, these amendments, a series of 8 online workshops have been scheduled by National Safeguarding Manager, Stephen Flynn. Workshops will last 30 minutes, and will include a Q&A facility.

3 The role of the Club Childrens Officer and Secretary

3 wins for Team Ireland at the European U15 Championships

Team Ireland recorded three wins, and three more boxers through to the quarter finals, on Day Two of the European U15 Championships in Montenegro today.

First up today was 42kg Ronan Charles – he progresses by way of a 5-0 Last 16 win over Finland’s Rolan Sigajlev. Judges scored the bout 27:30, 27:30, 26:30, 26:30, 28:29. Ronan boxes for a medal on Monday, against Latvia’s Denis Haschenko

44kg Pa Casey is a quarter finalist following a 5-0 win over Latvia’s Silvestrs Vasilevskis. Judges scored the bout 24:30, 25: 30, 27: 30, 25:30, 27:30. Pa boxes for a medal on Monday, against Poland’s Dominik Drewnowski

While 48kg Zac Creighton, returning for his second bout of the competition, wins through to the quarter finals with a storming 5-0 win over Luka Bondarenko of Latvia – 30:27, 30:27, 30: 27, 30: 27, 30: 27. Zac is back in action boxing for a medal on Wednesday, against Yehya Odeh of Israel

50kg Franky Mooney exits the championship on the narrowest of margins. He contested a high-octane Last 16 bout against Tobias Vicenik of the Czech Republic. The 3-2 decision went to Franky’s opponent. Judges scored the bout 28:29, 27:30, 29:28, 28:29, 29:28.

While four boxers were in the ring today, training and preparation continued for the remaining 15 members of the team. Coaches Paul Simpson, Tommy O’Donnell, John Coffey and Lynne McEnery delivered open air pads and skills training sessions today on the margins of the tournament.
