The Safety in Boxing course schedule for Connact on August 17th has, regrettably, been postponed.
IABA launched its Safety in Boxing Education Programme in May, and to date, courses have taken place in Belfast, Dublin, Cork, Kildare, Newry and Roscommon.
These are 1-day courses, led by Dr. Robert Scully in partnership with Jim Howe of getready.ie. They touch on Health and Safety, Basic First Aid and Athlete Injury covering topics including:
First Aid in the Workplace
Patient Assessment
Incident Procedure
Basic CPR Understanding
Common Medical Emergencies (asthma, diabetes, etc)
Injury Management & Shock
Care of the Unconscious Patient
This practical learning is being funded for members by IABA, through Sport Ireland. IABA hopes to provide this training to a total of 180 people in the first phase.
The Safety in Boxing Course, scheduled for August 17th in the Hub, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon, has been rescheduled to the same location on September 24th at 9.30am. All intending participants have been notified.

There are 7 days remaining for Registration for IABA’s Extraordinary General Meeting on Saturday, August 26th. The purpose of this EGM is to consider two matters. A special resolution and separately a motion.
A special resolution to amend the current constitution of the company so that we have more control over our operations without Constitutional restrictions.
A motion to decide if we should also Affiliate with World Boxing.
SPECIAL RESOLUTION
That, subject to consent of the Revenue Commissioners, the Constitution of the Company in the redline tracked form attached and marked with the letters “C” be adopted as the revised agreed Constitution of the Company.
RATIONALE FOR THIS SPECIAL RESOLUTION
On 22nd June the IOC withdrew recognition of the International Boxing Association (IBA), in accordance with Rule 3.7 of the Olympic Charter and demonstrates the need for IABA to have the ability to affiliate with other international federations which is precluded by our current Constitution as adopted.
The Board recognises and appreciates the concerns expressed by a number of Members and wishes to reassure Members that the provision would only be utilised in circumstances where the IABA Board felt it was in the best interests of the organization, following a ballot of Members. The proposed special resolution is to amend the Constitution of the Company to allow it to place the promotion of boxing in Ireland uncoupled with obligations that are inconsistent and distinct with those objects which relate to any third-party body.
The logic is to ensure that we are not restricted in our affiliations and that the members have more autonomy over this decision which currently has no flexibility in the Constitution as adopted.
MOTION
Does your club wish IABA to remain a member of the International Boxing Association (IBA) AND affiliate to World Boxing?
MOTION EXPLANATION
Should delegates at the EGM vote in favour of the resolution, the IABA will not resign from the IBA. Members are being asked if they wish the IABA to also join World Boxing. If delegates do not vote in favour of the resolution, IABA will not be able to join World Boxing because of restraints in the Constitution, regardless of the outcome of the vote on this motion.

Delegates nominated by clubs must verified members – this means they must be included in the club’s affiliation application, through Blocworx, for the 2023/2024 season as members and be over the age of 18. *Please note, delegates will be required to present photographic identification (passport, drivers’ licence, etc) on the day of the EGM.
Any questions which your club might wish to raise at the EGM the resolution and the motion or any other matter, should be submitted in advance of the EGM, either by post care of The Company Secretary to The National Stadium, 145 South Circular Road, Dublin 8, or by email to questions@iaba.ieno later than Friday, August 18th at 5:00pm. Notice of the Special Resolution for Extraordinary General Meeting
IABA is delighted to formally welcome Kristian Bunici to his role as Cork Boxing Development Officer.
Kristian boxed at St. Joseph’s/St. Ibar’s BC and Clonard BC, and competed at 71kg and 80kg. He began his coaching career in 2016 at GMIT – now ATU. He has a BA in Sport and Exercise Science and an MA in Human Movement Science with a specialisation in rehabilitation and health.
Kristian’s role, an IABA collaboration with Cork Sports Partnership, includes the delivery of all locally based school, community and club programmes in the Cork area. He will also facilitate training and capacity building within clubs and communities, thereby developing sustainable local leadership for boxing within communities in Cork.
Kristian’s role is of strategic importance to the IABA in achieving its strategic development programmes goals and enhancing existing professional structures.
Following a recommendation by Dunboyne BC at the Leinster EGM Info Meeting, it is proposed to establish a forum to discuss the matters on which clubs will vote at the EGM on August 26th.
This forum will publish a collected opinion before the close of EGM registration, midday August 23rd.
Owing to annual leave, the nomination process operated by the Central Council’s Officer Board, has been extended to 5pm on Tuesday, August 15th. The Central Council’s Officer Board may wish to nominate one person from each provincial unit from within its own membership, or it may wish to invite the provincial units to nominate a delegate to the forum.
As a result of the slight extension to the nomination window, the first proposed meeting of the forum will now take place, via Zoom, at 7pm on Thursday, August 17th.
The composition of the forum is proposed as:
6 delegates in total – One from each provincial unit.
The revised proposed meeting schedule is:
Thursday, August 17th – by Zoom at 7pm.
Monay, August 21st – by Zoom, at 7pm.
The duration of both meetings is up to the forum delegates
Minutes will issue to forum members after each meeting, and the final document, a collected opinion on the matters before clubs at the EGM on August 26th, will issue to all forum members for sign-off before publication on iaba.ie and issue to all clubs and units by email.
Meetings will be facilitated by IABA staff.

Notice of the Special Resolution for Extraordinary General Meeting
The 27 strong Team Ireland squad to contest the European Schools Championships will depart in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The tournament is being hosted by the Slovenian Boxing Federation in Maribor, from August 15th to 26th. The draw takes place on August 16th, and boxing begins on August 17th. In preparation for the tournament, the Irish team have been in camp with Squad Training and the National Stadium and have just returned from a training camp in Poland with that federation’s Schools team.
Central Council took the independent decision to field a team at this tournament at its meeting in July, following a review of all federations contesting previous underage European Championships this year. This review included the ongoing European Junior Championships, where competitor nations include Ukraine, England, Scotland and Wales.
Central Council is mindful of the fact that Irish athletes cannot contest against Russian or Belarussian athletes boxing under their own flag, and wanted to ensure there was as low a probability as possible of an Irish boxer being drawn against such an opponent.
Louise Joyce of Olympic BC, Westmeath and James Rooney of St John Bosco ABC, Belfast have been named Team Ireland’s flag-bearers for the European Schools Championships.
