Club consultation: IABA Governance Review.

The Board of Directors is seeking feedback and observations on the Governance Review of IABA, conducted by Brian McNeice. The review, which covered all aspects of the association and issued over 60 recommendations, is attached.

The IABA commissioned two workshops on the report, which were open to all adult members of all affiliated clubs.

All adult members of your club are invited to take part in the survey, which is available here.

All views are welcome, and the survey includes the facility to suggest reforms which may not have been included in the survey, as well as the facility to state which reforms you feel IABA should act on, and which reforms IABA should not act on. The survey will remain open until December 14th

Sport Ireland seeks boxing club feedback on Safeguarding Workshops.

Sport Ireland is seeking the input of boxing clubs on the assessment and development of safeguarding education provision.

Specifically, Sport Ireland would like to gather boxing’s feedback on the delivery method for the safeguarding workshops. Sport Ireland has created two surveys to gather your feedback, and these are aimed at two different participant groups:

Lisa O’Rourke nominated for RTE Sport Award

2022 World light middleweight champion, Lisa O’Rourke, has been nominated for an RTE Sport Award.

Lisa, from Castlerea Co. Roscommon, boxes out of Olympic BC, Galway. She has been nominated in the Young Sportsperson of the Year category – fittingly, as she celebrated her 20th birthday during the Women’s World Championships in May.

It’s been an extraordinary year for Lisa – she also won All Ireland U22 gold and European U22 gold.

The Team Ireland boxer is nominated alongside four other athletes: Rhasidat Adeleke, James Culhane, Eve McMahon and Israel Olatunde.

The winner will be announced live on RTÉ One on Saturday night, 17 December, in an awards show presented by Jacqui Hurley, Evanne Ní Chuilinn and Ruby Walsh.

Entries are now open for the 2023 National Elite Championships.

The 2023 National Elite Championships are the de facto beginning of selection for the Paris 2024 Olympics. All boxers wishing to be considered for the selection pool for any Olympic Games qualifiers must enter these Elite championships

Entry Format

  • Entry to the 2023 National Elite Championships is online, through your club’s Blocworx affiliation portal. Please log in using the same username and password your club used for the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 affiliation. If your username or password are no longer available to you, please contact Sally sally@iaba.ie, James james@iaba.ie or Ciara ciara@iaba.ie and your username and password will be reissued to you.
  • A video guide the entry process and payment process is attached. It will shortly be up-loaded on to IABA’s YouTube channel and the IABA website.
  • Entries open at 5pm on Tuesday, December 6th and close at 5pm on Friday, January 6th
  • Entries will only be accepted between these dates and through the Blocworx affiliation portal

Entry Fees:

€40, per boxer. Entry must be paid, online, at the point of entry or boxers cannot be included in the draw. Fees are non-refundable, including in instances where boxers withdraw. All fees must be paid by 5pm on January 6th.

Club review period

Once entries close at 5pm on Friday, January 6th, every club which has entered boxer(s) in to the 2023 National Elite Championships will have the opportunity to check and review their boxer’s information, including name and spelling of name, weight and gender category. Clubs will not be able to enter additional boxers during this period. This 48-hour window will close at 5pm on Sunday, January 8th. Clubs will be notified, directly, of the opening and closing of the review period.

Weigh-ins:

January 12th – 15th : 8.00am – 10.00am & 11.00am – 1.00pm

January 20th and 21st: 8.00am – 9.00am & 12.00pm – 1.00pm

Over 60 new coaches qualified this weekend.

Over 60 people have qualified as boxing coaches at two separate FUNdamentals: Assistant Coach course run this weekend, in counties Wexford and Roscommon.

The Fundamentals Assistant Coach qualification, when paired with Garda Vetting/Access NI and relevant safeguarding training, will enable club coaching, acting as first corner in club, county, or provincial bouts. Fundamentals qualified coaches can sit at second corner in National Championships.

The FUNdamentals course has been developed in a collaboration between the Officer Board of Central Council, IABA Staff and veteran club coaches as members of the IABA Coach Education Committee. Members include National Secretary, Antoinette Fay McClean, IABA National Club Development Manager, James Geraghty, Committee Chairperson, Michael Hawkins of Holy Trinity Boxing Club, Belfast, Coach Tutor, Gus Farrell of Monivea Boxing Club and IABA’s Bridget Scott. The Coach Education Committee is tasked with assisting and advising the IABA’s Board of Directors in its functions relating to the development of coaching and coaches.

The inaugural Fundamentals-Assistant Coach course took place on November 12th at the National Stadium. Two more courses, on November 26th, have taken place at the home of Irish Boxing, and a fourth course was staged at Holy Trinity BC, Belfast on November 19th. Over 80 coaches qualified in these courses.

This weekend, course were held at Sacre Coeur BC, Wexford (pictured) at which 30+ Wexford based coaches qualified, and at the Hub, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon, at which over 30 people became boxing caches.

The re-launched IABA Coach Education Pathway has three levels.

  • Fundamentals of Coaching Boxing-Assistant Coach – This course is for people wishing to begin their coaching career and gain an excellent grounding in fundamental technical aspects of boxing. Assistant coaches may sit at second corner in championship bouts.
  • Level 1 Club Coach –This course provides the minimum certification required for coaches to act as first corner in championship bouts and provides the technical grounding to enable coaches to bring boxers to competitive.
  • Level 2 Performance Coach–This course provides advanced technical skills and coaching techniques to Level 1 qualified coaches.

 The re-launched IABA Coach Education Pathway will follow this timetable:

Quarter Three, 2022: Fundamentals of Coaching Boxing -Assistant Coach courses will be made available.

Quarter Three, 2022-Quarter Two, 2023: Development of Level 1 Club Coach course.
