Work in Boxing: Cork Regional Boxing Development Officer

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association, in collaboration with Cork Sport Partnership, is delighted to announce the recruitment of the first ever Cork Regional Boxing Development Officer.

The appointment recognises Cork city and county’s proud boxing heritage. The role ensures Ireland’s most successful Olympic sport is open to even more people through boxing development programmes in a variety of settings, with a particular emphasis on IABA’s StartBox programme.

This full-time position is of strategic importance to the IABA in achieving its programme development goals and enhancing existing professional structures. The IABA is honoured to work with Cork Sport Partnership and Sport Ireland, through the Dormant Accounts Fund, in creating this role, and hopes this may be the first of several such roles in strategic locations around Ireland.

Work in Boxing: High Performance Administrator

IABA has an exciting vacancy working directly with High Performance boxers in Ireland’s most successful Olympic sport.

Our High Performance Unit is seeking a HP Administrator to provide logistics, planning and admin support to boxers including Olympic, World and European Championships.

Work in Boxing: Child Safeguarding Officer

IABA is recruiting a Safeguarding Officer to develop and implement a Safeguarding Project Plan.

This one-year, temporary position will work with IABA’s National Safeguarding Manager as a key member of the IABA Child Welfare and Safeguarding Team.

Job Description:

First group of new coaches qualify in the inaugural FUNdamentals: Assitant Coach course.

26 new coaches from 13 clubs have earned their boxing coaching stripes in the first coaching courses to take place since early 2020.

The FUNdamentals Assistant Coach course is part of the IABA’s new Coach Education pathway, and has been developed by the Coach Education Committee to meet Sport Ireland Standards. The Coach Education Committee is a collaboration between members and staff and includes: Micheal Hawkins (Holy Trinity Boxing Club, Belfast) Chair; Antoinette Fay McClean (Dungarvan Boxing Club, Waterford) IABA National Secretary; Gus Farrell, (Monivea Boxing Club, Galway) IABA Coach Tutor;Staff members – National Development Manager, James Geraghty & Bridget Scott

The reformed and redeveloped IABA Coach Education Pathway has three levels:

  • Fundamentals of Coaching Boxing Assistant Coach – This course is for those wishing to begin their coaching career and gain an excellent grounding in fundamental technical aspects of boxing. Assistant coaches may sit at second corner in championship bouts, and may sit at first or second at club, county or provincial bouts.
  • Level 1 Club Coach – This course provides the minimum certification required for coaches to act as first corner in championship bouts and provides the technical grounding to enable coaches to bring boxers to competition.
  • Level 2 Performance Coach – This course provides advanced technical skills and coaching techniques to Level 1 qualified coaches.

These new coaches can:

  • Assist any level 1 coach or above in their boxing club.
  • Are insured to coach within their boxing club.
  • Sit as number one in the corner for club, county and provincial competition.
  • Sit as number two to Level 1 coaches and above at national competition.
  • Assist in delivering schools boxing programmes.
  • Begin their 6-month journey gaining experience until they can apply for the IABA Level 1 (Club Coach) qualification.

Over 210 people have registered their interest in qualifying as a Fundamentals-Assistant Coach – IABA is making direct contact with each person to advise them of the details of their course. Numerous courses are scheduled in the coming weeks, bringing to 5 the number of opportunities for qualification for new coaches in a 5 week period:

November 19th: Ulster

November 26th – two courses will take place, simultaneously, in the National Stadium

December 4th: Connacht

Additional FUNdamentals: Assistant Coach courses will take place in the New Year and dates will be announced in due course.

Team Ireland depart for the World Youth Championships.

The countdown is on to the World Youth Championships in La Nucia, Spain.  Team Ireland’s 24 boxers depart are departing from Dublin Airport this afternoon.

In all, 89 countries and 684 boxers will contest the tournament, of whom 476 are youth men and 208 are youth women.

Almost half of all contestants are from federations within the EUBC.

The tournament will be contested at 25 weights – 13 male weights and 12 female weights. The largest weight for men, in terms of the number of boxers entered is lightweight (60kg) – 52 boxers will contest. For women, featherweight (57kg) is the largest, with 24 boxers.

Team Ireland departs on November 12th. The draw takes place on November 14th and boxing, at Ciudad Deportiva & Camilo Cano. Preliminaries and Quarter Finals will be boxed between November 15th and 22nd; semi finals take place on November 23rd. There’s a rest day on November 24th and finals will be boxed on November 25th.

Two rings will be in operation up to completion of the semi-finals; finals will be boxed in a single ring and the IBA will stream all bouts on its YouTube channel.
