IRISH TEAM FOR TOKYO 2020 QUALIFIERS NAMED

Ireland’s 13-strong squad for the European qualifiers for Tokyo 2020 in London has been confirmed.

Boxing begins on March 13 at the Copperbox Arena in the English capital.

Dublin’s former (2018) World Elite lightweight champion Kellie Harrington is included on the Irish panel, along with Antrim’s and Roscommon’s current European Elite feather and middle champions Kurt Walker and Aoife O’Rourke.

Harrington claimed silver at the Strandja multi-nations in Sofia, Bulgaria last month in her first outing since picking up a hand injury at the European Games in Minsk last June.

Rio 2016 Olympian Brendan Irvine lines out at flyweight, and Antrim siblings Aidan and Michaela Walsh will wear the Irish welter and feather vests.

There was intense competition for places on the Irish squad for London, according to Bernard Dunne, IABA High-Performance Director.

“We have some really good athletes pushing each other for places, so it has been a challenge to select our squad, but we have picked the best team to compete at the first qualifier in London, he said.

“We would be looking for some good performances from our team. We have two opportunities to qualify, London and Paris, so we will review the squad post London.

“Preparations have gone well so far, and we head to Italy on Monday for a sparring camp which will then lead us into the qualifier.

“They’ve worked extremely hard to get to this point, so if they perform to the best of their ability in London, then that is all we can ask of them.”

Team Ireland leave for their final training camp in Assisi, Italy on Monday and return home at the end of the month before heading to London where 77 Olympic places – 50 for men and 27 for women – will be up for grabs in the eight weight classes for males and five for females.

The African, Asia/Oceania, Americas and European qualifiers will be decided next month and early April to complete the Continental qualification process.

There’ll be one final World qualifier for Tokyo 2020 in Paris in May.

Please see below attachment for the breakdown of places per weights at the qualifiers.

ANNEX-1-Tokyo-2020-Qualification-System-Boxing (1) (1)

286 boxers – 186 men and 100 women – will compete at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

THE PRINCE OF THE IMMACULATA (TOKYO OLYMPICS)

Irish boxing is on familiar terms with winning medals at the Tokyo Olympics.

Ireland is building toward next month’s European qualifiers for Tokyo 2020 in London over half a century after Immaculata BC (Belfast) legend Jim McCourt, pictured, claimed Ireland’s only medal in any sport at Tokyo 1964.

Nicknamed “The Prince of the Immaculata”, McCourt won three fights en route to the last four but was agonisingly edged out of Velikton Barannikov (USSR) on a 3-2 split decision in the lightweight semi-final at the 18th Olympiad.

“I was very disappointed to lose my semi-final to the Russian star. Indeed, many thought that I was the winner on the day,” McCourt told Barry Flynn’s Legends of Irish Boxing.

The Ulster southpaw also won European Elite bronze in Berlin in 1965 and Commonwealth gold in Jamaica in 1966.

He exacted a measure of revenge for his Olympic semi-final defeat versus Poland’s Józef Grudzień at Dublin’s National Stadium.

Grudzień, who won silver at Mexico 1968, beat Barannikov in the 1964 Olympic final at Tokyo’s Kōrakuen Hall on a unanimous decision and was included on the Polish team for a meeting with Ireland at the Stadium in 1965.

The home of Irish boxing erupted after McCourt’s hand was raised in victory.

“The place was heaving that night in expectation of the fight with Grudzien,” said McCourt.”I wanted that fight so badly as I felt I had something to prove from Tokyo.

“I felt that it was up to me to prove a point. I fought a great fight and had him all over the ring. The roars of the crowd spurred me, I felt so happy when I got the decision.”

McCourt also represented Ireland at the 1968 Games in Mexico but lost in the preliminaries to Germany’s Gerd Puzicha at light-welter.

An unheralded boxing nation called Cuba slipped under the radar screen in Mexico and won two silver medals.

Four years later, Cuba topped the medals table at Munich 1972 and began to dominate Olympic boxing from that point on

A two-time Irish Olympian, McCourt has been inducted into the IABA Hall of Fame.

“Representing my country in the green vest; nothing else came close to giving me so much pride. To feel that I gave people so much pleasure in the boxing ring has made me think that it was all worthwhile,” he added.

Ireland, courtesy of McCourt’s bronze, finished joint 10th in the (boxing) medals table at Tokyo 1964 with Bulgaria, Finland, Ghana, Mexico, Nigeria, Tunisia and Uruguay.

Sean McCafferty, Chris Rafter, Paddy Fitzsimons and Brian Anderson also boxed at Tokyo 1964 where McCafferty was only beaten by the eventual champion, Italian flyweight Fernando Atzori.

An American who would later be nicknamed “Smokin’ Joe Frazier won heavyweight gold in Tokyo. Smokin’ Joe was called up to the USA as a late replacement after Buster Mathis was injured.

269 boxers from 56 nations competed at Tokyo 1964 where there was a few heavily dispute decisions. For instance, Korea’s Jo Dong Gi protested his defeat by sitting down in his corner for 51 minutes and not budging.

McCourt, meanwhile, admitted that he was stunned at the reception he received in Dublin on his arrival home and even more amazed at the reception he received in his native Belfast.
