NATIONAL SENIOR FINALS CONCLUDE AT THE STADIUM

Eighteen new Irish champions were crowned after a thrilling night of competition at the National Men’s and Women’s Seniors at the National Stadium tonight.

Light-flyweight Daina Moorehouse beat Emma Feeney to claim her first Senior belt.

The former European Youth champion earned a unanimous decision over the Cavan puncher to improve her haul to eight Irish titles at all levels.

Also a former European Junior champion, Moorehouse will have her name in the hat for the Elite Championships which begin at the Stadium on Monday week.

“I’m over the moon,” said Moorehouse – pictured in the main image with Brandon McCarthy tonight.

“I was looking forward to this for a long time and I’m happy with the win and looking forward to the Elites now.”

Meanwhile, Dublin’s Monkstown BC experienced mixed fortunes with Sean Kavanagh beating fellow Dubliner Nathan Horrogan in the flyweight decider but Sean Mari dropping a 4-1 split to Drogheda’s Ricky Nesbitt.

Castlebar flyweight Kirsten Cresham took home the women’s 51kg belt on a 3-2 split verdict over Kate Radomaska and Youth Olympian Dean Clancy, Zara Breslin and Kellie McLoughlin also had their hands raised in victory last evening.

Clancy beat Cork bantam Jamie Griffen and Breslin took all five judges with her versus Siobhan McKenna while McLoughlin toppled former World junior medallist Kelsey Leonard after a cracking encounter.

Clancy will also enter the Elites and was delighted to nail down an 8th Irish crown.- and ditch the headguard.

“I’m absolutely delighted with my performance, I felt I dominated and controlled the fight both inside and outside distances, he remarked.

“That was my first senior fight with no head guard (head guards are compulsory at all levels and genders expect Senior male) and I enjoyed every minute of it, really felt I belonged there tonight.

“Really excited to prove myself in the Senior and Elite ranks as I’ve done in underage.”

European medallists Brandon McCarthy and Evelyn Igharo, who took the early route to victory, also claimed gold at the Stadium.

McCarthy, who confirmed that he will be entering the Elites this month, collected his 14th Irish belt at the expense of Teo Alin and Renee Roach earned a 4-1 verdict over Isabella Hughes.

Cameron Bennett and Caoimhin Ferguson were involved in a classic, toe-to-toe dust-up at light-welter, Bennett getting the nod on a 3-2 split, while St Francis BC ace Rosie Doherty took home the women’s welter crown on a unanimous over Caoimhin Ferguson on an emotional night for the club.

Ken Moore, St Francis BC chief seconds, hailed Doherty’s performance against the Donegal woman.

Ferguson’s Illies GG team-mate Matthew McCole crowned a standout tournament in the men’s welter class versus Galway’s Martin Sammon, while European medalist Jason Harty made it two on the bounce for Limerick.

McCole, pictured below receiving his award, also scooped the Best Boxer of the Tournament Accolade.

Sean Crowley ensured that Arklow wouldn’t be leaving the home of Irish boxing empty-handed and Martin Mongans added to Harty’s win to complete the double for the Rathkeale BC.

The super-heavy belt also went to Limerick.

Martin Mongan of the Corpus Christi BC completed a perfect night – and four out of four – for Treaty boxing versus Galway’s Ciaran O Griofa in the 87th and final bout of the 2019 edition of the competition.

NATIONAL SENIOR FINALS 2019

Dean Clancy and Daina Moorehouse

The 2019 National Senior Championships conclude at the National Stadium tomorrow night.

Eighteen titles are on the line in the final weekend of action in Dublin.

Former European Junior and European champion Daina Moorehouse is in against Virginia BC (Cavan) light flyweight Emma Feeney in Friday’s curtain-raiser.

The 48kg showdown will be Moorehouse’s first appearance in a Senior decider and the Enniskerry BC stand out is planning to sign off on her outstanding underage career with another top of the podium finish.

“I’m looking forward to Friday night, the excitement is unreal. This is my first senior competition, said Moorehouse.

“The preparation has gone very well I’ve been flat out training the whole year. I think if I box how I know I can box I can come out with the win. I’ve seven Irish titles now, going for my eight.”

Feeney has four, including Colleges, Irish titles to her credit and believes that it will come down to who performs best.

“Feeling fit and ready. I’m looking forward to boxing a former European champion, it will be a good test and a good opening fight, she said.

“I’ve trained very hard for this and I hope to come out on top, but it’s all about who boxes the best and performs better on the night.”

Meanwhile, Brandon McCarthy, pictured below, has claimed a few Irish titles – rumour has it!

The St Michael’s Athy lightweight is in against Cookstown BC ace Theo Alin aiming for his 14th National crown on the bounce since winning Boy 1 gold.

Both young men have been in fine form, having progressed to the business end of the tournament on identical margins of victory – unanimous decisions and 4-1 splits.

McCarthy, a European medalist, admitted that the step up to Senior is demanding but he’s enjoying it.

“Preparations have been going to plan. All the work is done now so it’s just time to get in there and get the job done, he said.

“It’s going to be a tough final. The whole Championship was tough stepping up from Youth, but I’m very confident for tomorrow.”

Youth Olympian Dean Clancy faces Jamie Griffin for 56kg gold at the home of Irish boxing and Donegal’s Illies GG and Limerick’s Rathkeale BC will be targeting doubles, courtesy of  Caroline Gallagher and Matthew McCole and Jason Harty and Martin Mongans.

Rosie Doherty, Martin Sammon, Daniel O’Sullivan and Thomas Maughan stand in their way.

Friday’s weigh-ins will be held between 8am and 9am and 12pm and 1pm at the Stadium.

The IABA wishes all athletes the best of luck in their finals.
