DAY 1 RESULTS – EUROPEAN YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS

Ireland experienced contrasting fortunes on a day of split decisions for and against in the opening session of the European Youths in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Brandon McCarthy and William Hayden advanced to the last 16 this afternoon and evening.

But Jude Gallagher, Jason Myers and Matthew Tyndall bowed out at the last 32 stages on splits to Ukraine’s Ali Dahly, Russia’s Ilia Bogayyrev and Turkey’s Mehmet Aydemir in the fly, light-heavy and light welter classes.

McCarthy was always in the driving seat and earned an impressive unanimous decision over lively Azeri lightweight Eldar Babayev, but Gallagher was unlucky to be on the wrong end of a 3-2 verdict versus Dahly in the first bout on today’s card in Ring B.

Myers took the fight to Bogayyrev in all three rounds and detonated some big head and body shots in rounds one and two, but the rangy Russian light-heavy, whose left jab was probably the deciding factor, won 4-1.

Likewise with the hard-working Tyndall against Aydemir, but after three close rounds of boxing  the Turk got the nod.

Hayden and Armenian battler Arsen Grigoryan didn’t have to go looking for each other. Both men went toe-to-toe in a firey 69kg contest with  Hayden impressing in rounds one and two and finding the target with a neat uppercut under pressure in the third en route to a 3-2 verdict.

Daina Moorehouse, the 2018 European Youth champion, and Dean Clancy, were Ireland’s flag bearers at today’s opening ceremony.

Six Irish boxers are in action tomorrow.
