IRISH TEAMS ABROAD UPDATE

 

Ireland will spar with Cuba at the German Olympic Centre in Kienbaum this afternoon in the countdown to the World Elites Men’s Championships in Ekaterinburg, Russia.

The squad leave Germany on Thursday for Ekaterinburg which is located on the border between Europe and Asia under the shadow of the Ural mountain range.

Approximately 450 athletes from 87 nations have registered to compete at the 20th edition of the World Men’s Elites since the inaugural tournament at Havana 1974.

Team Ireland is training with Germany, Cuba and the Netherlands in Kienbaum. Several Olympic champions are included on the Cuban team.

Boxing begins next Monday in Ekaterinburg.

 

 

Meanwhile, the Irish team for the European Men’s and Women’s Youth Championships arrived in Sofia, Bulgaria yesterday.

The draw will be made at around 3.30pm today (Irish time) with boxing scheduled to begin tomorrow.

Ireland’s 18-strong squad trained at Dublin’s National Stadium and the Sports Centre in Dungarvan in the lead up to the tournament.

SQUAD TRAINING SCHOOLBOY/GIRLS

 

 

 

All boxers who are this seasons Boy 2 and Boy 3 Irish Champions (2005/2006) plus all this years Junior Cadet Boy Champions are asked to attend squad training in the High Performance Gym at the National Boxing Stadium Dublin, on Sunday, September 8th, from 11am – 3:30pm.

All boxers who are Girl 2 and Girl 3 Irish Champions this season (2005/2006) from 45KG to 63KG inclusive, and any of this years Junior Cadet Champions from 46KG to 64KG inclusive are also asked to attend squad training.

This training will aid with the selection of boxers to represent Ireland in an International contest against Germany in October.

Training on September 8th will consist of two sessions of boxing with lunch provided between sessions.

All boxers attending are asked to present with their full boxing gear including good quality 16oz sparring gloves, bag gloves, headguard, groin guards, chest protectors, wraps, gumshields, skipping rope, water for two sessions and a change of clothes.

IRELAND ON WAY TO SOFIA FOR EUROPEAN YOUTHS

 

Ireland’s 18-strong squad are en route to Sofia this morning ahead of the start of the European Men’s and Women’s Youth Championships in the Bulgarian capital.

 

The draw for the tournament will be made tomorrow with boxing slated to begin Wednesday.

37 nations including Ireland are registered for the competition.

Ireland completed their final training camp in Dungarvan over the weekend and are ready to roll, according to Irish coach Billy McClean.

“The team had an extremely good training camp and they’re in top form. We’re just waiting on the draw now and the squad will be ready to go in Wednesday’s preliminaries,” he said.

 

 

The Irish panel for Sofia secured National U/18 titles at the National Stadium earlier this summer.
