The Celtic Box Cup is an AIBA registered international tournament and runs on September 27/28/29 this year.

 

2019 EUROPEAN WOMEN’S ELITE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Boxing begins on August 24 in the Spanish capital.

Eligible athletes will compete across 10 weight classes – 48 kg, 51 kg, 54 kg, 57 kg, 60 kg, 64 kg, 69 kg, 75 kg, 81 kg, 81+kg.

The Irish squad for the 12th edition of the tournament will be confirmed shortly.

Ireland has claimed 6 gold and 4 bronze medals at this level since the inaugural European Women’s Elites in France in 2001 and lie in 8th spot in the all time medals table.

Katie Taylor (6 gold), Clare Grace, Christina Desmond, Michaela Walsh and current World Elite champion Kellie Harrington have finished in podium positions.

2019 marks the first occasion Madrid has hosted a European Elite competition since Athens 2004 Olympian Andy Lee claimed silver at the EU Championships in the city 15 years ago.

 

IABA EXTENDS ITS DEEP SYMPATHIES TO MCGUIGAN FAMILY

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association has extended its deep condolences to the McGuigan family following the death of Danika McGuigan.

Danika McGuigan, daughter of Barry McGuigan, sadly passed away on Tuesday aged 30.

Her family released a statement saying they were devastated by the death of their beautiful daughter and sister.

“After a brief but brave battle against cancer, Nika passed away peacefully in the early hours of Tuesday 23rd July, surrounded by her loving family, the McGuigan family said.

“It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our beautiful daughter and sister, Danika “Nika” McGuigan.”

May she rest in eternal peace.

 

EUROPEAN SCHOOLBOY/GIRL CHAMPIONSHIPS UPDATE

Ireland will continue their preparations for the European Schoolboy/girl Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia at the Clann Naofa Boxing Academy in Dundalk over the weekend.

The 32-strong squad begin training at the club tomorrow and finish next Monday.

The team departs for Tbilisi on Thursday week (August 1) with boxing scheduled to begin on August 4 in the Georgian capital.

It’s expected that 31 nations, including Ireland. will compete at the 17th edition of the tournament.

The final two Irish tournaments left to be decided are the National Novice and National Senior Championships in September and November.

Irish boxing, however, is heading into a busy six weeks on the international front with the European Schoolboy/girl, European Women’s Elite and European Youth Championships scheduled for Tbilisi, Madrid and Sofia in August and September.

The Celtic Box Cup, Smithfield Box Cup, Michael Andrews Tournament, Esker Box Cup and Wexford Box Cup will be decided in September and October.
