TWO INTO FINALS AT EUROPEAN JUNIOR C’SHIPS

Winnie McDonagh and Marie Marine-Gabriel blasted their way into their respective finals at the European Juniors in Galati, Romania today.

But Robyn Kelly, Aaliyah Butler, Tiegan Farrell and Dearbhla Tinnelly had to settle for bronze after close three-rounders with Russia.

McDonagh put the pressure on and kept it on against Germany’s Ani Manukyan to upgrade her guaranteed bronze to at least silver.

The Dubliner found the target with big shots throughout her semi-final with Manukyan receiving a public warning for holding in the third.

Italy’s Elen Ayari, who took two standing counts in rounds two and three, was unable to handle the accuracy and frequency of Marine Gabriel’s left jab, but it was the Irish champion’s right that sealed the win after the Galway titlist rocked her opponent with a massive shot in the third.

Kelly won the second against Anastasia Kirienko but took a debatable standing count in the third. The first frame was fairly even. Big performance from Kelly, particularly in the second stanza.

Butler and Liana Tarasian were closely matched in all three rounds but it was the Russian that got the nod after a tight bantamweight clash.

Farrell and Natalia Zavialova of Russia were involved in a cagey 66kg contest. Farrell found the target with some solid backhands in rounds two and three, while her eastern Europe opponent had to work hard for her victory.

Tinnelly, the last Irish boxer in competition this evening, was beaten on points by Valeriia Vorontsova after an all southpaw 75kg semi-final. Tinnelly, working well with her backhand, had a good second frame while rounds 1 and 3 were decided on tight margins.

Meanwhile, the Boys in Green will be boxing for places in the finals tomorrow with three between the ropes in Galati. As things stand, Ireland is guaranteed at least two silver and seven bronze.

EUROPEAN JUNIOR SEMI-FINALS

Team Ireland will be giving it “right lash” in Thursday’s and Friday’s semi-finals at the European Junior Championships in Galati, Romania, according to Irish head coach Billy McClean.

Nine Irish boxers – all of whom are guaranteed at least bronze – compete for places in Saturday’s finals.

Seven of the squad meet Russia with two semi-finals versus Germany and Italy also to be decided.

Russia, Ukraine and Ireland have the highest representation in the last four.

The entire Irish squad completed a training session this morning and are ready to roll.

“We’re extremely proud of how the team have performed so far in Romania,” said McClean who is working Ireland’s corner with James Doyle, Gerard McDaid, John Gallagher and Aoife Hennigan.

“They’ve all boxed extremely well and we have two big days days of competition yet to come.

“The girls are up first tomorrow, then the boys on Friday. They’ll take a lot of confidence from their wins here and the team had a good training session today. They’ll be giving it a right lash in the semi-finals,you can be guaranteed that.”

Team Ireland are due to arrive home via Bucharest via Dublin Airport (Terminal 1) at 4.45pm on Sunday.

IRELAND GUARANTEED NINE BRONZE AT EURO JUNIORS

Irish boxing deposited another five medals in its account to improve to at least nine bronze at the European Junior Championships in Romania.

Marie Marine-Gabriel, Aaliyah Butler, Tiegan Farrell, Tiegan Farrell and Taylor Guiney had their hands raised in victory in their quarter-finals this afternoon and early evening.

Marine-Gabriel showed her class versus Veronika Zajicova of the Czech Republic and the equally impressive Butler silenced the home fans versus Antoneia Alecu.

Farrell decisioned Radmyla Rodinova of the Ukraine in a close 66kg clash to ensure that she’ll be standing on the medals podium this weekend.

But Breda Quilligan and and Mark Duffy lost out in close bouts to Hungary and England. Big performances from both Irish teens, while Dylan Eagleson was desperately unlucky to go out to Russia’s Timur Khalilov. All of the 13-strong Russian male squad are through to the last four.

The Antrim southpaw, scoring almost exclusively with his backhand, won the first and third rounds of a livey 46kg encounter on the unofficial scorecards but the talented Khalilov was awarded a 3-2 split decision.

Cork lightweight Michael McCarthy and Magomed Mamaev went toe-to-toe in a tight three-rounder but the Russian got the nod to advance to the last four.

Duffy was in against Vinny Huczmann and on another day his long reach and accurate backhand might have taken the verdict but the judges went with the English middle.

Guiney and Farrell finished off the day on a high note for Ireland with victories over Armenia’s Narek Zakharyan and Turkey’s Nur Kocaoglu.

Wednesday is a rest day at the tournament. The female semi-finals will be decided on Thursday followed by the male semi-finals on Friday.
