DESMOND TO BE HONOURED IN THE REBEL COUNTY

Current Irish Elite middleweight champion Christina Desmond, pictured, will be honoured by the Lord Mayor of Cork in Cork City Hall tonight.

The Macroom southpaw claimed a historic World University bronze in Thailand last year, a first for Irish boxing, and also secured bronze at the European Women’s Elite Championships in Bulgaria.

Athlone BC heavyweight Ken Okungbowa competed in the semi-finals after Desmond and also took home bronze from Thailand.

In total, Desmond, who boxes out of the Fr. Horgan’s BC, has won 14 Irish titles and World University and European Elite medals. She’s also claimed AIBA World Youth silver and represented her country at the Youth Olympics.

The Limerick Institute of Technology student scored the biggest win of her career last year after sensationally beating Olympic silver medallist Nouchka Fontjin of the Netherlands at the European Olympic qualifiers.

The Dutch ace, who is ranked No. 2 in the world, bounced back from that shock to qualify for Rio through the AIBA World Elite Women’s Championships. She reached the Olympic 75kg final where she was beaten by Claressa Shields of the USA.

Desmond’s bronze medal at the European Elites – which entitles her to 300 AIBA World rankings points – saw her join Katie Taylor and Clare Grace as one of three Irish women to finish in a podium position at this level.

She’ll be presented with a bronze emblem this evening to mark her outstanding achievements in 2016. The Cork County Boxing Board will also be lauded at City Hall.

The Rebel County won 30 All-Ireland titles last season, a record for the sport on Leeside.

HISTORIC DAY FOR THE CLAREMORRIS BC

The official opening of the Claremorris Boxing Club, the only Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) affiliated boxing club in Claremorris, took place shortly before Christmas.

The launch of the club’s new premises was performed by Minster Michael Ring TD, Minister of State for Regional Economic Development, and the benediction by Parish priest Fr. Peter Gannon.

Members of the Claremorris BC and families, local Council representatives and the Chamber of Commerce attended.

Also in attendance was Stephen Connolly, National Registrar with the Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) who said the club’s athletes now had a state-of-the-art facility to train in. He also hailed the enduring role of club Secretary and coach Joe Charles who, he said, has given outstanding service to the club for over half a century.

Pat Ryan, President of the IABA, penned a letter, which was read out on the day, of congratulations to the Claremorris BC and wished the progressive Mayo unit the very best of luck in the future.

Connacht President Joe Hennigan, Irish team manager at the Rio Olympics and numerous top international tournaments, also wished the club the best of fortune going forward.

Some of the great names in Connacht boxing, Gerry Coyle, Johnny Carey, Sean Horkan, who was Irish team manager at the 1992 Barcelona Games, Frank Ward, Joe Lavelle and Gerald Keane attended the opening.

“There was a great letter read out on the day from Colm Flynn who founded the club back in 1961. Colm had some great times in Claremorris boxing club and some great stories to share in his letter and is still involved in boxing in Ennis, Co. Clare today,” said club coach Ray Charles, son of Joe Charles.

“He stated in his letter that he was very touched by the welcome he got from the Claremorris people and said he could see the great love for boxing in the town.”

Thirteen exhibition bouts were decided on the day featuring up and coming prospects in addition to well-known athletes in Connacht. The contests were refereed by former Irish Elite champion Peter Mullen.

“It was a day that will go down in history for boxing in Claremorris for many years to come and we would like to thank all for their invaluable contributions. So many people have contributed to the club and if I omit any names my sincere apologise,” added Ray Charles.

IRISH, EUROPEAN AND WORLD ELITE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Brendan Irvine (red)

Irish boxing is building toward the upcoming National Elite Men’s and Women’s Championships at the National Stadium in Dublin.

The flagship tournament of Irish boxing will be the first since November/December 2015, as the IABA ran the Elite Championships twice the year before last to facilitate Ireland’s boxers heading into the qualifiers for Rio 2016.

As things stand, two of the male and female belts are vacant and both have been vacated by Bray BC team-mates and London 2012 Olympians after Katie Taylor turned pro and Adam Nolan hung up his gloves.

The men’s middleweight title is also vacant.

Taylor beat Shauna O’Keeffe, the only woman to challenge the London 2012 Olympic champion for an Irish belt at the National Stadium, in November 2015 and Nolan claimed his fifth and final Elite crown at the expense of Michael Stokes a few weeks later.

The first Elite Championships of 2015 was held in January of that year.

Lauran Hogan, Michaela Walsh, Dervla Duffy, Kellie Harrington, Clare Grace and Dianna Campbell won two National Elite titles each in 2015 and Brendan Irvine, Kurt Walker, Dean Walsh, Adam Nolan, Michael O’Reilly, Darren O’Neill and Dean Gardiner claimed two apiece in the men’s tournament, Rio Olympian Irvine securing his double at different weights (light-fly and fly).

Meantime, the men’s tournament at the home of Irish boxing has particular significance, as the 2017 European Men’s Elite Championships will be held at the host city to be confirmed in June or July, while the 2017 Men’s World Elite Championships are slated for Hamburg, Germany from August 25th to September 3rd.

The European Elites will act as the only qualifier for the 19th edition of the World Elites which will feature 280 boxers. Ten places go to the host nation and ten wild cards are available, one in each weight, leaving 260 places up for grabs through the various Continental routes through Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania.

The European Elites yields 80 places, eight in each weight, for the World Elites. Likewise, boxers reaching the quarter-finals at the Europeans, which has the highest quota of all the Continents, book tickets for Hamburg.
