PAUL GRIFFIN APPOINTED TO AIBA COMMITTEE

On Friday, March 26th, the world body AIBA announced that Paul Griffin had been appointed to the AIBA ‘Champions and Veterans Committee’ following a vote by the AIBA Board of Directors.

Griffin was one of Ireland’s most decorated boxers ever. He won six Irish juvenile titles, two Gaelic Youth titles, an Intermediate title (Senior) and four Elite titles and numerous multi-nation titles.

In 1991, he went to Sweden for the European Elites and claimed the gold medal and title of European Champion. The following year he represented Ireland at the Olympic games in Barcelona and in 1993 he won a bronze medal at the European Elite Championships in Turkey.

He had 220 contests in his ‘short’ career and was only defeated 12 times. He retired from the sport very early and we will always wonder what more he could have achieved in an Irish vest with his massive ability if he stayed on.

Thankfully he is giving back to the game now in his role as coach with his alma mater, Drimnagh Boxing Club. What an asset for any club to have!
