Record-Breaking Team Ireland Claim 3 Golds At The European Youth Championships.

Team Ireland were awarded bronze Team of the Tournament.

A record breaking Team Ireland squad has claimed 3 gold medals at the European Youth Championships in Sofia, Buglaria.

400 boxers, from 40 nations, contested the tournament, which began last Thursday.

The Irish 2022 team has won more medals at this competition that any other Team Ireland Youth squad contesting a European level tournament.

Going in to today’s finals, Ireland had four bronze medals, courtesy of 48kg boxers Georgia Dunn McGovern and Patsy Joyce, 50kg Katie O’Keeffe, and 63kg Winnie McDonagh.

Four boxers contested today’s finals. 70kg Laura Moran, who boxed Veronika Nakota of Ukraine, is coming home with a silver medal.

Bringing home gold are Team Co-Captain, 71kg Bobbi Flood, 81kg Dearbhla Tinnelly and 81+kg Cliona D’arcy.

The recorded victories over Gabriele Rontani Guidi of Italy, Karine Airpapetian of Ukraine and Polina Cherenko of Ukraine, respectively.

A 24 strong team contested the tournament representing Ireland and for many, this was their first time competing internationally. They showed maturity, composure and boxing skill in how they comported themselves at the tournament.

Ireland’s boxers also showed great team spirit, and could be heard singing and chanting throughout the tournament space whenever a boxer bearing the Irish flag got between the ropes. Team Ireland was awarded bronze team of the tournament. Silver went to England and Ukraine claimed gold.
