Two boxers, Kellie Harrington and Katie Taylor, are among 8 athletes shortlisted for the RTÉ Sportsperson of the Year Award.
The nominees include 6 women, after an historic 2021.
RTÉ says of Olympic Champion, Kellie Harrington “Portland Row boxer Harrington won gold in the lightweight boxing final at Tokyo Games. She delivered an exhibition of intelligent fighting to claim her unanimous decision victory over reigning world champion Beatriz Ferreira of Brazil.”
And of Katie Taylor “‘Pride of Bray’ Taylor remains the undisputed lightweight world champion after twice this year successfully defending her titles. Natasha Jonas was beaten on a hard-fought points decision in Manchester, before American Jennifer Han was defeated with ease in Leeds. Taylor fights Firuza Sharipova on Saturday night in Liverpool.”
The other nominees are Rachael Blackmore, Ellen Keane, Cian Lynch, Leona Maguire, Jason Smyth and Vikki Wall. The winner will be announced live on RTÉ One next Saturday, 18 December.
The Sportsperson of the Year is selected by a judging panel. The criteria can be read here

Sport Ireland is in the process of developing a Volunteer Strategy for Sport, and stakeholder feedback is an essential element in the development of the strategy.
We would ask that every club nominate a committee of members to complete the below survey link on or before Friday 17th December.
In order for Sport Ireland to develop a strategy that reflects the volunteering landscape in Ireland, your clubs’ voice is of great importance.
Due to the latest government restrictions that came into place on Tuesday December 7th, the remaining stages of the National Boy/Girl 1 & 2 Championships will be spectator free.
This means that only the boxers, their coaches and the Championship officials can attend the venue.
No parents, siblings or relatives will be allowed entry.
All coaches and officials must provide their EU Digital COVID Certificate (vaccine or recovery certificate) prior to gaining admittance to the venue.
Boxing takes place this weekend in Drimnagh Boxing Club, Keeper Road, Drimnagh, Dublin 12 on Friday, December 10th at 6pm, Saturday, December 11th at 11am and 3pm and again on Sunday, December 12th at 11am.
There is one week left in which clubs can register for the IABA AGM, on company matters. The AGM takes places, via Zoom, on Monday, December 20th at 7pm.
The holding of an AGM before December 31st is a requirement of the Companies Act, is permitted by means of electronic communications in the Companies (Miscellaneous Provisions (Covid-19) Act 2020 Section 174A (3),(5).
No elections to any office will be held at this meeting.
As advised on November 22nd, the deferral of the election element of the AGM is to allow candidates in the elections to Central Council affected by the recent determination of the Independent Membership Panel to exercise their right to an external appeal of that decision, using the mechanisms of Sports Dispute Service Ireland, SDSI.
AGM Agenda:
Chairperson’s welcome address
Adoption of minutes of the 2020 AGM.
Safeguarding report
Anti-doping report
2020 audited financial statements and directors report
Re-appointment of auditors, by ballot of club voting delegates.
Attendance
This event is being held online, only. All attendees need to register for tickets through Eventbrite and also set up a Zoom Account with a matching email address, per attendee. Affiliated clubs can register here
Affiliated clubs can register two attendees – a club voting delegate and a non-voting delegate.
Registration through Eventbrite will include an option for club voting delegates (1 per affiliated club) to vote on Item 6, the re-appointment of auditors. Club voting delegates can vote on Item 6 during the Eventbrite registration process. The result of the vote on re-appointment of auditors will be announced at the AGM.
In order to confirm numbers, registration will close on Wednesday 15th December at 12pm. Only registered and affiliated IABA members will be permitted to attend the AGM.
Questions on company matters can be submitted to Company Secretary, John Nangle, via info@iaba.ie by Wednesday 15th December at 12pm, marked for the attention of the Company Secretary.
Annual Report & Financial Statement: BKRM Corporate Services, have prepared an Annual Report and Financial Statement for the financial year ended December 31st, 2020. The report and statement are available on the IABA website, here.
The remaining items on the originally scheduled agenda: elections, CEO up-date and the President’s closing address, will take place at a meeting to be announced in due course.
Notes:
All clubs attending remotely are advised to set up a Zoom account well before the AGM. IABA has published a how-to guide on setting up a Zoom account, available here
