
Team Ireland will come home from the European School Championships in Slovenia with 3 gold, 1 silver and 7 bronze medal – along with the 3rd place finish in the medals table. 32 federations competed in the tournament. In all, 380 boxers contested the tournament.
Ukraine topped the medals table with 20, followed by England, with 12. Team Ireland had the largest women’s team, of 12 boxers, and the joint second-largest men’s team, of 14 boxers.
36kg Louise Joyce (Olympic L) opened proceedings in Bout 1 against England’s Summer Grigg. She came away with gold, following a 5-0 win. Five bouts later, 46kg Ella Archbold (Ballybrack) was likewise victorious over Armenia’s Hamest Afrikyan, this time on a 4-1 split. 64kg Cassie Henderson (Phoenix Antrim) contested against Italy’s Gaia Gaia Caldarella, and was the 5-0 winner, and so, the champion.50kg Jason Donoghue (Olympic L) met Armenia’s Karen Zakharyan – he boxed strongly, and comes home with silver following a 4-1 split in favour of his opponent.
Team Ireland’s bronze medalists, 42kg Carley O’Herron (Rochfordbridge ), 44kg Aleigha Murphy (Crumlin), 54kg Sophie Lawlor (Wexford CBS), 57kg Kaysie Joyce (Clonmel), 70kg Ava Lannon (Dungarvan), 75kg John Ward ( Monivea), 90kg Jake Fitzgerald (Dungarvan) were all awarded their medals during the finals.




The team is en route home today, and will land at Dublin Airport, from Zurich, at 22:05hrs.
