Team Ireland has departed for Sheffield, and a multi-nations camp ahead of the World Boxing Championships in September.
144 boxers from 18 nations are participating in this camp, taking place at GB Boxing’s headquarters in Sheffield. In addition to Ireland, nations include: USA, Kazakhstan, India, Germany, England, France, Poland, Canada, Korea, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Philippines, Lithuania, Saudi Arabia, Kosovo and Slovakia.
High Performance Director, Jon Mackey, says “Our preparations for the World Boxing Championships have so far included a 7 week bloc of training in the High Performance Unit, a domestic sparring camp with Hungary and Norway, and attending a multi-nations sparring camp in Germany. This 10 day Sheffield camp is the final part of our preparations, and the quality of sparring there will be superb – steel sharpens steel. I’ve been impressed by the professionalism, discipline and commitment shown by all 17 members of the team. They are where they need to be in terms of their readiness.”
Team Ireland will be supported in this camp by Physiotherapist, Rob Tuomey, Sport Ireland Nutritionist, Dr. Sharon Madigan, and Sport Ireland S&C Specialist, John Cleary.
More than 500 boxers from over 60 countries are expected to take part in the World Boxing Championships, which will be the first Elite-level global championships hosted by World Boxing, the new International Federation for Olympic style boxing. It will be the biggest Olympic-style boxing event to take place in Britain since the London 2012 Olympic Games. The action will feature competition in 10 weight classes for both men and women and be the first time ever that male and female boxers have competed in Olympic-style boxing for the title of World Boxing Champion at the same event.
Contesting this Championships is made possible by IABA clubs’ decision in April to also affiliate to World Boxing, on a dual member basis. World Boxing, which will run boxing at the LA28 Olympic Games, affirmed IABA as a member in May.
