Team NI Secure 3 Commonwealth Games Medals.

Team NI, which qualified 9 boxers for Quarter Finals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, has claimed at least three medals on the first day of QF boxing.

50kg Carly McNaul was the unanimous decision winner over Keshani Hansika of Sri Lanka. Judges scored the bout 27:30, 27:30, 27:30, 26:30, 26:30 in favour of the boxer in blue. Carly, a 2018 Gold Coast silver medallist, takes on Uganda’s Teddy Nakimuli in her semi final on Saturday at 2.30pm.

70kg Eireann Nugent was similar dominant and decisive in her opening bout of the tournament, a quarter final against England’s Jodie Wilkinson. The English boxer had a point deducted in the 3rd round, and the judges scored the bout: 29:27, 29:27, 29:27, 28:28, 29:27. Eireann meets Rosie Eccles of Wales in her Semi Final on Saturday at 11:45am.

57kg Jude Gallagher, boxing his third bout of the tournament, was the 5-0 winner over Pakistan’s Illyas Hussain: 26:30, 27:30, 24:30, 27:30, 26:30. Jude faces Canada’s Leoma-Ali Al-Ahmadieh in his Semi Final on Saturday at 7:30pm.

48kg Nicole Clyde, making her debut at the tournament, contested against very strong opposition in Nitu Nitu of India. Nicole left it all in the ring, and the bout did not proceed beyond Round Two.

Thursday is another bumper day for Team NI – a trio of Team NI boxers begin their tournaments. Emerald BC’s Michaela Walsh, a Tokyo Olympian and World No. 5, takes on Botswana in Quarter Final action at 1.15pm. 63kg World Champion, St. Bronagh’s Amy Broadhurst, contesting the Games at 60kg, meets Zambia in her QF at 7.30pm. 2022 European Silver medallist, Dylan Eagleson, boxes Mozambique in his Quarter Final at 12.45pm.

Tokyo bronze medallist 71kg Aidan Walsh, a 2018 Commonwealth Games silver medallist, returns to the ring for his Quarter Final, against England’s Mohammed Harris Akbar at 2.30pm. 51kg Clepson dos Santos Paiva is also back in action – he boxes his QF against Wales’ Jake Dodd at 6pm.
