Paddy Donovan, Gabriel Dossen and David Oliver Joyce, pictured above today, rattled out a hat-trick of last 32 wins at the European U/22 Championships in Vladikavkaz, Russia this afternoon.
“A great day at the Europeans. All three boxers were in control of their contests and won convincingly,” said Irish team manager Stephen Molloy.
Limerick southpaw Donovan impressed en route to a 4-1 split decision over durable Dutch welter Sam Wagensvela over three, three minute rounds.
One judge scored the fight 29-28 to Wagensvela while another scored it 30-26 (one 10-8 round) to the Our Lady of Lourdes BC man.
Irish male captain Gabriel Dossen followed that up with a unanimous decision over Moldova’s Andrei Vreme, the Galway (Olympic BC) middle winning every round en route to the last 16.
Dublin southpaw David Oliver Joyce completed a perfect day for Ireland on a unanimous decision over Oleg Chulkyacheyev of the Ukraine.
The Ballymun BC lightweight will be back in action tomorrow versus Russia.
“We are very happy with three wins and performances of Paddy, Gabriel and Davey and delighted to win three bouts,” said the Irish head coach in Russia, Dmitry Dimitruk.
Mary Geraghty and Pierce O’Leary are also between the ropes on Sunday.
So far, Ireland has recorded four wins from five from the opening two days of the 34-nation tournament.
