Victories for Mari & Cassidy at Olympic Qualifier

Ireland is now three from three at the 2nd Olympic Qualifier, following two more wins today.

66kg Grainne Walsh opened Ireland’s account on Friday with victory over Mai Ngoc Hoang of Vietnam, and Sean Mari and Kelyn Cassidy did likewise, today.

51kg Sean Mari open proceedings this morning, and was the first bout in Ring A, against Faheem Muhammad of Pakistan. This was a tricky bout against a pro-box, but Sean rallied in rounds 2 and 4 to claim a 4-1 split decision win. Judges scored the bout: 28:29; 29:28; 27:30; 27:30; 28:29. He is back in action on Thursday, when he meets Malaysia’s Muhammad Abdul Qaiyam Ariffin

80kg Kelyn Cassidy made his debut at the tournament against Delil Dadaev of Germany – this was a hotly contested bout, with standing counts for both boxers in the third round. Kelyn was the 4-1 victor on a scoreline of 29:26; 29:26; 27:28; 28:27; 28:27. He will take India’s Abhimany Loura in Monday’s Afternoon session.

579 boxers from 133 countries are contesting the tournament. As with the 1st Olympic World Qualifier in March, boxers will contest to quota; meaning, they will cease to box at a qualification bout. There will be no semi-finals or finals, and no medals bestowed. In5 of the weights Ireland is contesting in Bangkok (50kg, 54kg, 66kg, 51kg and 92+kg), 4 Paris quota places are available. In Men’s 71kg, 5 quota places are available, and there are 3 in Men’s 80kg – which means the de-facto bronze medalists will box off for the final quota place in that weight

Day Three

71kg Aidan Walsh is the only Irish boxer in the ring on Sunday – he contests against Boniface Mogunde Maina of Kenya in Bout 6 of Ring A’s Evening Session. He should be in action at 1.45pm, Irish time
