WALKER TO LEAD OUT IRELAND AT EURO GAMES CLOSING CEREMONY (REVISITED)

Kurt Walker will lead out Team Ireland at tonight’s closing ceremony at the 2nd European Games in Minsk, Belarus.

The Canal BC bantam claimed gold at the tournament this afternoon after beating Mykola Butsenko of Ukraine.

Walker, who said he was thrilled with the win, hailed the contributions of Irish coaches Zaur Antia, John Conlan and Dimitry Dimitruk and High-Performance Director Bernard Dunne for their tactical plan.

The Irish staff prepared the “Odessa File” and Walker delivered with a unanimous decision over the Odessa-born southpaw.

Irish captain Kellie Harrington had to withdraw from today’s lightweight final with Finland’s Mira Potkonen because of a hand injury.

Walker (gold), Harrington (silver), Michaela Walsh (silver), Regan Buckley (bronze), Grainne Walsh (bronze) and Michael Nevin (bronze) medalled for Ireland.

Ireland finished in 5th spot in the medals table at the 44-nation tournament.

Great Britain, Ukraine, Armenia, Russia and Ireland commanded the top five positions.

Team Ireland are due to arrive home tomorrow morning via Dublin Airport at 11.15am (Flight LH979, Terminal 1)
