Ceire Smith in action

Twenty five nations, according to the organisers, plan to compete at the World University Championships which begin at Chiang Mai University in Thailand next Monday.

Afghanistan, Belarus, People’s Republic of China, Finland, France, Germany, England, Ireland, Japan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Mongolia, Nepal, Poland, South Africa, Slovenia, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Palestine and the host nation are slated to battle it out at the 7th edition of the tournament.

The Irish Third Athletic Third-Level Boxing Association will be represented by Ceire Smith, pictured, Gary McKenna, Conor Wallace, Christina Desmond and Ken Okungbowa in south east Asia. Paddy Gallagher will be working Ireland’s corner and Paul Geoghegan is Irish team manager.

The Irish squad depart for Thailand tomorrow, September 30th. Boxing begins Monday.
