Ireland claimed two wins from 2 on the fourth day of boxing in the 2024 European Youth Championship in Porec, Croatia.

33 countries and 330 boxers are contesting the competition, in Porec, Croatia. 57kg Martin McDonagh made his tournament debut in bout 2 of Ring A’s Afternoon Session, contesting against Leighton Steven Birchal of England. This was a closely contested bout, made more tense by the calling of a bout review before the release of the result. This occurs in certain circumstances in a 3-2 split decision; the opinions of the Evaluators are included with the judges’ scores. The 5-2 decision went to Martin, meaning both Evaluators ajudged him to have won. The ringside judges scores were: 29:28; 29:28; 28:29; 28:29; 28:29.

60kg Jack Johnson returned for this second bout of the championships – against Gaetano Buonocore of Italy, and had his hand raised following a 4-1 decision. Judges scored the bout: 28:29; 29:28; 27:30; 27:30; 28:29. Jack is through to the Quarter Finals and is next in the ring on Thursday.

Ireland has a highly successful recent history at the tournament – the 2022 team won more medals at this competition that any other Team Ireland Youth squad contesting a European level tournament. They came home with 3 gold for Team Co-Captain, 71kg Bobbi Flood, 81kg Dearbhla Tinnelly and 81+kg Cliona D’arcy, a silver for 70kg Laura Moran and 3 bronze for 48kg boxers Georgia Dunn McGovern and Patsy Joyce, 50kg Katie O’Keeffe, and 63kg Winnie McDonagh.
