Team Ireland homecoming: Monday, August 12th

Homecoming celebrations for Team Ireland as they return home from the Paris Olympic Games have been confirmed. This includes Team Ireland Boxing’s two time Olympic medalist, Kellie Harrington, and team-mates Daina Moorehouse, Jenny Lehane, Michaela Walsh, Grainne Walsh, Aoife O’Rourke, Jude Gallagher, Dean Clancy, Aidan Walsh and Jack Marley.

This is the first time the Irish Olympic Team have received a civic reception on its return home and the event has been planned in conjunction with Dublin City Council. The Olympic Federation of Ireland says ” We look forward to this momentous occasion that will honour the athletes and their achievements with a public reception this Monday lunchtime; 12th August. “

The event will take place on O’Connell St in front of the GPO, beginning at 12.30pm. This event is fully free to the public and everyone is welcome to attend. Tickets are not required to attend, so come along to O’Connell Street on Monday with family and friends and help give our wonderful team the homecoming they deserve.

There will be entertainment provided on the afternoon by Block Rockin’ Beats DJ Dec Pierce to get the crowd going before the Irish team takes to the stage.

Team Ireland have won seven medals so far at Paris 2024; four gold across four different sports, and three bronze. This is Ireland’s most successful ever Olympic team, and it being the 100 year anniversary of Ireland’s first participation in the Olympics makes it even more special.

“We’ve all enjoyed watching the Irish Athletes do us proud in Paris,” said the Lord Mayor of Dublin James Geoghegan. Now is our chance to tell them in person just how proud we are of them. I have no doubt their efforts will have inspired lots of girls and boys all over the city and country to try and be like them some day. So come along to O’Connell St on Monday and let’s give the Irish Team a welcome home to remember!”

Team Ireland Chef de Mission Gavin Noble said: Over the past few weeks our athletes have performed outstandingly, and have inspired the nation with their endeavours at the Olympic Games in Paris. We are really proud of each and every one of them, and we would like to thank Dublin City Council for hosting such a special event to honour them.”

Dublin City Council is asking people to use public transport when travelling to and from the event, which is a family-friendly, alcohol-free event. The latest information on public transport may be found at www.transportforireland.ie.

Members of the public are asked to enter O’Connell St. from the O’Connell Bridge end. Those attending are asked to follow the event signage and stewards’ instructions.

To celebrate Team Ireland’s achievements, the Samuel Beckett Bridge will feature a special message on the evenings of Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th August.

Done & Dusted: Kellie Harrington confirms international retirement

She has nothing left to prove; there are no more mountains left to climb. Two time Olympic Champion, Kellie Harrington, has confirmed her retirement from international boxing.

Kellie, on the night she made history at Stade Roland Garros, said she was “98%” certain that her battle with China’s Yang Wenlu for Olympic gold was her last international bout. She’s confirmed today that this decision is at 100% . Speaking to Morning Ireland this morning, Kellie said “I know now, that’s it, done, dusted and what a way to go out,” The double Olympic champ added “The fact that I know that I am now done, and the fact that I am finishing this way [is great], ‘cos a lot of the time people don’t know when to finish, and I’m happy that I am making that decision to finish it this way, my way, and go out as a double Olympic champion….That’s it, that was it, done, dusted, I’ve nothing more to prove, not even to myself, which is the most important thing.”

Kellie began her boxing career as a 15 year old, training at Corinthians BC. She’s also been a member of West Finglas BC, and has trained at St. Mary’s BC, Tallaght, under Noel Burke, since 2018. Her first senior title was the 2006 Irish Open Championships Intermediates.

Kellie’s international career has been stellar, She won a silver medal in the lightweight division at the 2017 Women’s European Union Boxing Championships and a bronze at the 2018 Women’s European Boxing Championships. She won the gold medal in the lightweight division at the 2018 Women’s World Boxing Championships. She was the silver medallist in the light welterweight division at the 2016 Women’s World Boxing Championships – where she contested against her Paris 2024 finals opponent, Yang Wenlu for the first time. She’s claimed European Championships gold (Budva, 2022) and bronze (2017; 2024).

She and Michaela Walsh jointly hold the title for the most ever Elite National championship golds – at 11, apiece. Kellie says, however, she’s not quite done with domestic boxing, and speaking to Morning Ireland said “I’m relieved to be done with the scales but I’ll always train because I believe that training helps me with my mental health, helps me to release those good endorphins and to feel good about myself….I’ll be hanging around the Sport [Ireland] institute, they are not going to get rid of me that easy…I feel like I have a lot of stuff that I can pass on to other athletes, so I want to do that.”

Kellie’s status as an icon, not only of boxing, but of Irish sport, has been recognised over the years. in 2022, she was granted the Freedom of Dublin City – in the same year, she was joint Grand Marshall, with Ellen Keane, of the Dublin St. Patrick’s Day Parade and was commemorated by An Post in a limited edition stamp collection of Irish sportswomen.

Outside of boxing, Kellie has been vocal about how much her part-time job at St Vincent’s Hospital where she works as a cleaner has helped her to stay grounded…she has worked there for over 11 years.

Ireland’s European Schools medal haul rises to 7.

70kg Dominic Barrett is assured of at least a bronze medal – he was back in action today, contesting his quarter final against Turkey’s Ibrahim Taksin. Dominic was dominant and decisive, winning all but one round on one judge’s score card. The 5-0 decision sees him through to Thursday’s semi finals, where he’ll contests against Moldova. The Judges scores this evening were: 30:27; 30:27; 30:27; 29:29; 30:27.

48kg Christy Joyce contested his second bout of the tournament, a quarter final, against Russia’s Khamzat Fargiev. That bound ended in an RSC 2. 50kg Francis Maughan boxed for a medal against Georgia’s Mirian Voloshin and despite a valiant effort, the 5-0 decision went to his opponent on a scoreline of 26:30; 27:30; 27:30; 28:29; 27:30. 75kg Ethan Duffy began his tournament at quarter final stage, against Lithuania’s Emilis Kavaliunas – he gave the bout his all, but the 5-0 decision went to his opponent on a scoreline of 30:26; 30:26; 29:27; 30:26; 30:26.

Thirty nations are participating: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, England, Estonia, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey. There are 363 boxers in the tournament – 363 boys and 240 girls. August 8th is a rest day at the tournament. This is the 21st iteration of the championship. The first Europeans, for male boxers 13 and 14 years old, was held in Rome, Italy in 2003. The most successful team was Turkey, who went home with six gold medals. Second place went to Russia, with three champions, while Ireland, Italy, Azerbaijan and England had one gold medal each. The first EUBC Schoolgirls European Boxing Championships was held in Albena, Bulgaria in 2018. Fifteen years after the inaugural Schoolboys Championships, 12 girls were crowned European Champions.

Semi Finals

In Ring A’s Afternoon Session (Bout 6) 44kg Alannah Murphy boxes for a place in the finals against Glafira Rokhina of Russia. In Bout 9, 60kg Vanessa Doyle meets Petritsi Panagiota.
