Bring Your Smiley Faces: Olympic Champ Kellie Harrington To Co-Lead Ireland’s National St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Tokyo Olympic Champion, Kellie Harrington, and Tokyo Paralympic Champion, Ellen Keane, will be joint Grand Marshall’s at today’s National St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin.

St Patrick’s Festival organiser say Kellie and Ellen’s achievements “represent the very best of Ireland – strength, perseverance and generosity of spirit”.

 “They represent all who wear their Irishness with pride, uplifting our people, connecting us as a nation,”

“Ellen and Kellie reflect more than sporting achievement, they represent all our people whose talent and commitment to excellence brings pride to Ireland – sportspeople, artists, makers, creators, thinkers, dreamers, innovators, entrepreneurs and many more, from all realms of life.”

Kellie says its an honour and a privilege to co-lead the parade, the first in the City Centre in two years.

She says she is looking forward to “bring the magic back to the streets of Dublin”.\

The parade begins at midday on Parnell Square in the north of the city, down O’Connell Street, over O’Connell Bridge and through the south side of the city, ending at the Cuffe St/Kevin St junction

St. Patrick’s Day International Exhibition Of Boxing.

The Home of Irish Boxing will host a series of International Exhibitions to mark St. Patrick’s Day.

20 bouts, in all, will showcase Irish Boxing, and will feature boxers from Norway, Poland, Croatia and Lithuania.

Spectators are welcome – door open at 3pm and exhibitions begin at 4pm.

There will be NO Red Line trams running between Smithfield and The Point from 10:00 to 15:00 approx. Red Line trams will run between Tallaght / Saggart and Smithfield only during these times.

There will be NO Green Line trams running between St. Stephen’s Green and Dominick from 01:30 to 18:00 approx. Trams will run between Broombridge and Dominick, and between St. Stephen’s Green and Brides Glen only during these times.

Team Ireland Records 2 Wins At The European U22 Championships.

Team Ireland recorded 2 wins on Day Four of the European U22 Championships, which also marked the beginning of the women’s competition.

57kg Zara Breslin put in a dominant performance against Hungary’s Beata Varga, and came away with a unanimous decision win. Zara has won through to the Quarter Finals, and will next box on Friday, in the afternoon session.

54kg Niamh Fay recorded a unanimous decision victory over her Ukrainian opponent,

Niamh is also through to the Quarter Finals, and will next box in Friday’s evening session, against Finland’s Jonna Hakkarainen.

It wasn’t to be for 48kg Nicole Clyde today, who opened proceedings in Ring A’s first bout.

She met her namesake, Nichole Durikova of Slovakia, with the split decision in favour of the Irish woman’s opponent.

Day Five’s programme, and Day Four’s session results have yet to be released by the tournament organisers.

The European U22 Championsips are being live-streamed on YouTube, and links per ring and session are issued on the day of boxing, before the sessions begin.

Over 200 boxers will contest the 2022 Junior 1 & 2 National Championships, being boxed at the National Stadium complex over the next two weekends.

Schedule of Boxing – Junior 1 National Championships:

Quarter Finals: Friday, March 18th at 6pm.

Semi Finals: Saturday, March 19th at 11am.

Finals: Sunday, March 20th at 2.15pm.

Quarter Finals: Friday, March 25th.

Semi Finals: Saturday, March 26th.

Finals: Sunday, March 27th.

Competition arrangements:

Venue: The National Stadium, Dublin.

Weigh-ins: Daily, on the day of boxing, between 8am and 9am and 12pm and 1pm. Please note that even those with walkovers in finals must weigh in.

Rounds:  Boxing will be 3 x 2-minute rounds for Junior 1 and Junior 2

Entries: Only those sent by the Secretaries of the Provincial Councils and of the Antrim and Dublin County Boards shall be accepted. Entries must be submitted by 5pm on Friday 4th March.

At the conclusion of the Unit Championships, details of names, club, age (B4/G4/J1/J2) and weights for the Irish Championships must be sent by email to sally@iaba.ie and to Stephen Connolly at s.connolly1961@yahoo.com If any boxer is moving up in weight from the Unit Championships, the boxers club must notify the Unit Secretary of same before entries are sent. As there was no Championship in 2021, there will be no current champions entering.

Entry Fee: A €10 entry fee applies. This fee will be collected from all boxers at the weigh-in on their first day of boxing. Boxers must also give their Boxing Record Book to National Registrar and Chief Official Stephen Connolly at their initial weigh-in.

Anti-Doping: Boxers must provide details of any medication they are taking or have taken in the preceding 4 weeks. Anti-Doping may be carried out at any stage of the competition.

Attention is called to the stipulation in the IABA Rule book that each boxer presented by his/her club shall be fit to box. This is the responsibility of the club.

Attire: Coaches must wear tracksuits and runners in their corners at all sessions and endeavour to set a high standard of hygiene. Only qualified coaches are permitted in corners.

N.B. It is a condition of entry that all boxers and their clubs have signed and submitted the Members Acknowledgement Form and it is the responsibility of the entering unit that this stipulation is complied with. 

Gumshields: Red/Orange/Pink or variations of these colours are not allowed.

Any boxer who is participating in other contact sports (see www.iba.sport) shall be removed from these Championships.

3 Team Ireland Boxers In Action On Day 4 Of The European U22 Championships.

Welterweight Barry O’Connor banked his second win of the European U22 Championships, with a stylish performance against Bulgarian Stepan Kirkorov on day three of the tournament.

O’Connor’s unanimous decision win follows a 4-1 split decision win over Aljaz Sircelj in his debut on Day 2.

In all, 319 boxers from 39 countries are taking part in the championships, being hosted by the Croatian Boxing Federation in Poreč.

Three Team Ireland boxers are in action on Day Four, as the women’s competition begins.
