Team Ireland Claim 4 Medals At The European U22 Championships, & The Chance To Up-Grade

4 Team Ireland women have secured at least bronze medals at the European U22 championships, and will box to up-grade from Sunday.

It was a bumper day for Team Ireland, with 8 boxers in Quarter Final action in Porec, Croatia.

57kg Zara Breslin and 54kg Niamh Fay returned to the ring today in their Quarter Finals, having won their opening bouts on Wednesday, against Hungary and Ukraine, respectively. Zara’s interest in the tournament came to an end following a split decision loss to Italy. Niamh has secured at least a bronze, following a comprehensive 5-0 victory over Jonna Hakkrainen of Finand.

Light flyweight Caitlin Fryers also met Finnish opposition in Pihla Kaivo-Oja, but she goes out following a 5-0 decision in favour of her opponent.

Light middleweight Lisa O’Rourke met Melissa Gemini of Italy, and was decisive and dominant throughout the bout to record a unanimous decision win.

Welterweight Kaci Rock has secured passage to the semi-finals following a 3-2 split decision win over Ukraine’s Maryna Stokio – Kaci’s clubmate, Daina Moorehouse faced home boxer and World medallist, Nikolina Cacic, and came out the wrong side of a 3-2 split. Middleweight Aoibhe Carabine won a unanimous decision victory over Hungary’s Regina Lakos. Light welterweight, Eve Woods, contested against Italy’s Miriam Tommasone and exist the competitio following a 5-0 decision for her opponent; Middleweight Aoibhe Carabine won a unanimous decision victory over Hungary’s Regina Lakos.

All four women are back in action in the women’s semi finals on Sunday.

Saturday is men’s quarter-finals day, another busy one for Team Ireland, with 6 boxers contesting.

Lightweight Paul Loonam recorded a unanimous decision win over Hungary’s Ruben Romai in a dominating performance on St. Patrick’s Day, and will box again tomorrow. Likewise, bantamweight Dylan Eagleson, who put in an assured performance against Armenia’s Erik Tokhyan and came away with a unanimous decision on Thursday.

Making their tournament debuts are 49kg Padraig Downey, who will meet Buglarian Ergyunal Sebahtin. Flyweight Clepson dos Santos will take on Azerbaijan’s Nijat Huseynov. Heavyweight, Jack Marley, who received a bye in the draw, will step between the ropes in the quarter final afternoon session. Barry O’Connor will box his third bout of the tournament in the semi-finals

Competition arrangements:

Venue: The National Stadium, Dublin.

Weigh-ins: Daily, on the day of boxing, between 8am and 9am and 12pm and 1pm. Please note that even those with walkovers in finals must weigh in.

Rounds:  Boxing will be 3 x 2-minute rounds for Junior 1 and Junior 2

Entries: Only those sent by the Secretaries of the Provincial Councils and of the Antrim and Dublin County Boards shall be accepted. Entries must be submitted by 5pm on Friday 4th March.

At the conclusion of the Unit Championships, details of names, club, age (B4/G4/J1/J2) and weights for the Irish Championships must be sent by email to sally@iaba.ie and to Stephen Connolly at s.connolly1961@yahoo.com If any boxer is moving up in weight from the Unit Championships, the boxers club must notify the Unit Secretary of same before entries are sent. As there was no Championship in 2021, there will be no current champions entering.

Entry Fee: A €10 entry fee applies. This fee will be collected from all boxers at the weigh-in on their first day of boxing. Boxers must also give their Boxing Record Book to National Registrar and Chief Official Stephen Connolly at their initial weigh-in.

Anti-Doping: Boxers must provide details of any medication they are taking or have taken in the preceding 4 weeks. Anti-Doping may be carried out at any stage of the competition.

Attention is called to the stipulation in the IABA Rule book that each boxer presented by his/her club shall be fit to box. This is the responsibility of the club.

Attire: Coaches must wear tracksuits and runners in their corners at all sessions and endeavour to set a high standard of hygiene. Only qualified coaches are permitted in corners.

N.B. It is a condition of entry that all boxers and their clubs have signed and submitted the Members Acknowledgement Form and it is the responsibility of the entering unit that this stipulation is complied with. 

Gumshields: Red/Orange/Pink or variations of these colours are not allowed.

Any boxer who is participating in other contact sports (see www.iba.sport) shall be removed from these Championships.

2 Wins For Team Ireland At The European U22 Championship

Two more Team Ireland booked their places in the quarter finals of the European U22 Championships today.

Lightweight Paul Loonam recorded a unanimous decision win over Hungary’s Ruben Romai in a dominating performance in Porec, Croatia.

Both men contest their respective Quarter Finals on Saturday.

Not to be for Featherweight Jake (Taylor) McMahon, who came out the wrong side of a unanimous decision in his contest with Tahir Taha Akkoyun.
