MIXED FORTUNES FOR MARI AND EARLEY

Ireland experienced mixed fortunes on 4-1 split decisions at the European U/22 Championships in Roseto, Italy this afternoon.

Sean Mari advanced but Niamh Earley bowed out.

Mari, an Irish army man and son of team manager, Tara Mari, beat England’s Hamza Mahmood.

But Earley lost on an identical scoreline to Romane Moulan of France.

Dean Clancy and Gabriel Dossen will be in action in the evening session.

CLANCY AND MOLLOY ADVANCE ON DAY 1 OF EURO U/22 CHAMPIONSHIPS

Dean Clancy progressed at the European U/22 Championships in Roseto, Italy tonight.

The Irish light-welter posted a unanimous decision over Petr Novak of the Czech Republic, with Clancy winning the first round 10-9 across the board.

Earlier today, Kieran Molloy advanced to the last 16.

The Galway welterweight beat Germany’s Dan Krotter on a 4-1 split decision over three, three minute rounds.

Molloy found the target with a solid body shot in the opening round and continued to dominate in rounds two and three of a tight contest.

IRELAND ARRIVE IN ITALY

Team Ireland are in Italy ahead of the start of the European U/ 22 Championships.

The first Continental event of the year begins in Roseto degli Abruzzi on Thursday.

The Championships will be the biggest ever European U/22s as 41 nations and over 300 male and female boxers have entered.

The first edition of the EUBC European U22 Boxing Championships was held in Kaliningrad, Russia in 2012. After five years of a break, Braila hosted the second edition in 2017, which was followed by another Romanian venue, Targu Jiu in 2018. Russia’s Vladikavkaz hosted the last edition in March 2019 where the host country dominated the competition.

Ireland are using a ten strong squad at the 2021 edition of the tournament.
