WALSH SETTLES FOR SILVER IN PARIS

Michaela Walsh had to settle for silver in today’s 57kg final with Irma Testa at the European qualifiers for Tokyo in Paris.

The Belfast featherweight was beaten on a unanimous decision over three, three minute rounds.

Testa, who had a height and reach advantage, took rounds one and two leaving Walsh with a steep hill to climb in the final stanza.

Still. Walsh started the third very well and was on top for at least the first minute of the round, but Testa had enough in the bank from the earlier rounds to secure victory.

The Testa versus Walsh final brings Ireland’s competitive interest in the tournament to a close.

HARRINGTON WINS GOLD IN PARIS

Kellie Harrington (red)

Kellie Harrington claimed gold today at the European qualifiers for Tokyo in Paris, France.

The Dublin lightweight secured a 4-1 split decision over Caroline Dubois of Great Britain.

Harrington opted to box southpaw for the duration of this contest and controlled the tempo and terms of the bout from the opening bell.

The No. 2 seed in Paris found the target with a wide variety of punches throughout and while Dubois came into the fight in the last round the outcome was never in doubt with Harrington winning rounds one and two.

The emotional champion received the congratulations of Irish coaches Zaur Antia and John Conlan after the final bell.

Her seeding for the Tokyo Olympics will improve following today’s win.

Meanwhile, Michaela Walsh will be in action at 5pm today versus Italy’s Irma Testa.

BRENNAN QUALIFIES FOR TOKYO

Emmet Brennan will be on the plane to Tokyo.

The Dublin light-heavy booked his ticket after beating Sweden’s Liridon Nuha in box-off for an Olympic place tonight.

A tense battle saw Brennan prevail despite receiving a harsh public warning for holding against an opponent who hit on and after the break three times.

Brennan started the brighter and lashed home two hooks in the opening seconds of this encounter but Nuha replied with shots of his own in a round the Dubliner won 4-1.

The second round was close, Brennan winning 3-2 to set up an exciting final three minutes.

Brennan received a pubic warning in the third but ultimately it had no bearing on the final outcome, a deserved victory for the Irishman.

“I’ve actually been not as nervous as I should have been, the last hour I was just taking it as a normal fight, and trying to get into my head: ‘I just have to get a win, it’s only 9 minutes away, said Brennan.

“There was no point in dwelling on a loss, when I had to get ready for the biggest fight of my life. It was last chance, so I had no choice but to throw that out of the way.

“There are no egos on the team, everyone works together, we have a strong squad, we have a strong backroom staff, and we’re all just working together. Zero egos, and that makes for a happier dressing room, and makes for better training across the board.

“The plan is to get a medal. I’m going to give it everything I have, I quit boxing and only came back four or five years ago. The goal was to get to the Olympics. Now it’s to push on and try to get a medal, I’m going to give it everything I have.”
