CELTIC EAGLES EYE UP A SENIOR HAT-TRICK

Daniel and Jason Kyne will be aiming to set up a shot at a hat-trick for the Celtic Eagles BC at the National Senior finals in Dublin on Friday night.

Gytis Lisinskas is also in action for the Galway club at the National Stadium.

The Connacht unit, along with the Crumlin BC, has the highest representation in the weekend’s finals and Pawel Popko is anticipating an eventful evening at the home of Irish boxing.

“They’ve boxed very well so far and I am full of confidence,” said the Celtic Eagles BC head coach.

The Kyne brothers meet Dublin and Limerick light-welter and welter Senan Kelly (Crumlin BC) and Paddy Donovan (Our Lady of Lourdes BC) and Lisinskas is in against Dean Scullion (Loughshore BC) in the 87th and final bout of the tournament at super heavy.

Jason has won three bouts so far in Dublin, Daniel two and Lisinskas beat Kilkenny’s Aidan O’Neill in the last four.

The Galway trio have all won Connacht and Celtic Box Cup titles this year.

“We have a plan for the guys. We know how to box them (opponents). We have a tough fight against Patrick Donovan. He is a good boxer. Hopefully, we are going to get the three titles,” added Popko.

Meanwhile, Kilkenny light-heavy Kevin Kehoe reckons he’ll be in a place he wants to be in this weekend.

“I’m looing forward to the final Friday night. It’s where we planned to be from the start of the tournament, can’t wait,” said Kehoe who meets Cork’s Tommy Hyde for 81kg gold.

World Youth medallist Gabriel Dossen and Caitlin Fryers are also between the ropes on Friday evening, with Dossen slated to meet Dundalk’s Christopher Mulligan in the middleweight class.

Mulligan is one of two Clann Naofa BC athletes through to the business end of the tournament along with Shauna O’Callaghan.

Finals weigh-ins – 8am to 9am and 12pm to 1pm at the National Stadium.

NATIONAL SENIOR FINALS

Cork light heavy Tommy Hyde, pictured, was delighted to get his first win at the National Senior Championships under his belt in Dublin last weekend.

The Mayfield BC man, who claimed gold and the Best Boxer Award at the Celtic Box Cup in Dungarvan earlier this year, beat Philip Hickey on unanimous decision last Friday to set up this Friday’s decider with Marble City BC stand out Kevin Kehoe.

Hyde is a relative of Leeside boxing legend Tommy “The Prince” Hyde who, boxing for the Sunnyside BC, won an Irish Elite belt at the National Stadium in 1946.

Seventy two years later his namesake is aiming for his third Irish title at the same venue.

”I’m happy with the performance. It’s always nice to get past the first fight.Great to be back fighting in the All Ireland’s again. I can’t wait for the final now,” said the Leesider after winning his first national Senior contest five days ago.

“My main focus now is the Seniors which will set me up for the Elites in February.”

Kehoe impressed in his win over Davit Tsotsoria to set up what could be the bout of the night at IABA headquarters on Friday.

Galway’s Celtic Eagles BC, meantime, has three athletes through to the business end of the competition after a hat-trick of victories in the last four.

Daniel Kyne, Jason Kyne and Gytis Lisinskas had their hands raised in victory to ensure that the Tribesmen have the highest representation of any club on finals night.

Belfast’s World Youth bronze medal Caitlin Fryers, picture above in red, meets Mayo’s Kirsten Cresham for the flyweight crown in the opening bout of the evening.

Athy’s Terry Donohue advanced from last weekend’s semi-finals versus Ben Nelson and faces Adam Hession for the men’s flyweight belt .

Finals weigh-ins – 8am to 9am and 12pm to 1pm at the National Stadium.
