IRELAND V ENGLAND 1ST LEG

Tipperary’s Jerome Lonergan-Garthland and Ellie Mae-Garthland will write their own piece of Irish boxing history on Friday evening when they line out for Ireland versus England in a Senior Cadet international at the St Brigid’s BC in Offaly.

The Clonmel BC brother and sister team are slated to meet England’s Billy Adam and  Sameenah Toussaint in Edenderry and become the first male and female twins to represent their country internationally

Ellie, explained Clonmel BC coach Martin Fennessy, is a three-time Irish champion who has represented Ireland twice against Italy and France, and Jerome, also an Irish titlist, boxed for Ireland at the 2016 European Schoolboy Championships in Croatia where he beat Bulgaria’s Krasimir Dzhurov but lost to Russia’s eventual finalist Kiril Kladovikov in the quarter-finals.

The twins, who are between the ropes in back-to-back bouts on Friday, also claimed double gold at the Wexford Box Cup in 2017.

“They’re both very dedicated and motivated boxers and we wish them and the Irish team the very best of luck on Friday night,” said Fennessy.

The Edenderry international will be decided over 20 bouts (subject to change). Boxing begins at 6pm.

Admission: €10 for Adults and €5 for U/15s.

Both nations meet again on Saturday night at the St Michael’s Athy BC in Kildare.

COUNTDOWN TO YOUTH OLYMPICS BEGIN

Dean Clancy

Just 26 days remain to the opening bell for the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Lauren Kelly (St Brigid’s, Edenderry), Dervla Rooney (Sean McDermott BC) and Dean Clancy (Ballinacarrow BC) will represent Ireland at the Games in the middle, feather and fly classes.

Some of the world’s top boxers, including Ireland’s current WBA pro champion Ryan Burnett and three-time European Elite champion and three-time World Elite medallist Joe Ward, have represented their country at this level this decade.

Burnett claimed light-flyweight gold in Singapore in 2010 after beating Azerbaijan’s Salman Alizide in the 48kg final just a few months after he was edged out in the World Youth final by Alizide in Baku,Azerbaijan.

The Belfast orthodox, now boxing at bantam in the paid ranks, confirmed that he donated his Irish light-fly vest to the Sports Museum in Singapore after his historic win.

The light-fly final in 2010 was the first ever Olympic Youth gold medal match in boxing.

Ward, meantime, is the only Irish boxer to represent his country at the Youth Olympics (Singapore 2010) and the Olympics (Rio 2016).

Former World Junior champion Ciara Ginty and Michael Gallagher won silver and bronze for Ireland at the 2014 Youth Olympics in China.

The 2018 Youth Olympics begins on October 14.

The competition will be contested in the men’s light fly (49kg), bantam (56kg), light (60kg), light welter (64kg), welter (69kg), middle (75kg), light heavy (81kg), heavy (91kg) and super heavy (91+kg) and women’s fly (51kg), feather (57kg), light (60kg) and middle (75kg) weights.
