TOTANA SPARRING CAMP 2018

Arrival is Sunday 8th July and departure Saturday 14th July.

Male and female boxers of all ages and levels are welcome.  There will be young boxers and novices attending plus national squads and top amateur teams.  Everyone will be matched at their own level.

Itinerary will follow the same format as previous years.  All training facilities are within 10 minutes of hotel and courtesy shuttle buses are included in the price.

Early morning: choice of guided mountain run, track session, swim in 50m outdoor pool.

afternoon/evening: sparring sessions. evening: coaches’ meeting.

Spa and fitness suite plus outdoor pool and sunbathing area are open all day in the hotel to use as you wish.

Shuttle buses are also available to take you into the local town to spend some of your down time.

Please note that there is also an optional half day trip to the beach on the Wednesday morning of the camp (this trip is included in the total cost), return is in time for the evening sparring sessions.

The camp is all-inclusive with full board meal plan in the hotel and the price is the same as last year, as always it is based on 2 people sharing a twin room.  The price is 525 euros per person for the complete camp.

If you require a double room for individual use please let me know, the supplement is 20 euros per person, per night so there is an additional cost of 120 euros for the camp.  This is only necessary if you do not want to share a twin room.

For teams with an uneven number we will make 1 room a triple and there is no change to the 525 euros price per person.

Please note that the deposit to guarantee your place on the camp is 125 euros and it can be paid via PayPal using this link  https://paypal.me/samuelstorey.  Any payments should clearly state the name of the boxer or team. The remaining balance of 400 euros is payable in cash on arrival at the hotel.

There are no currency exchange facilities in the hotel or the local town so please consider this prior to arrival and bring euros. There is no cash machine in the hotel either although there are banks with cash withdrawal machines in the local town and these can be used with all main cards to withdraw cash in euros.

All airport transfers and local transport are included in the price and pick ups are from either ALICANTE or MURCIA SAN JAVIER international airports.

Please note that flights are separate and you have to buy them yourself, we collect you from the airport.

We recommend using an application like https://www.skyscanner.net to search for the cheapest flights, all the budget airlines use these airports.

Pick ups are on 8 July and drop offs on 14 July at a time that suits your flights so please organize your arrival and departure for these dates.  I will be in touch nearer the time to request flight details and schedule your airport to hotel minibus transfers.

Please check out Facebook page TOTANA SPARRING CAMP for photos, videos, comments, etc from previous years.

BROADHURST AND O’ROURKE CRUISE INTO EURO U/22 FINALS

Amy Broadhurst and Aoife O’Rourke upgraded their guaranteed bronze medals to at least silver in emphatic style at the European U/22 Championships in Targu Jui, Romania.

Both women produced massive last-four performances to progress to Sunday’s finals.

The Dundalk and Roscommon lightweight and middleweight scored unanimous decisions – with a few 10-8 rounds apiece thrown into the bargain – versus France’s Belinda Limuka and Italy’s Carlotta Paoletti.

Today’s wins see Team Ireland match the performance, so far, of the 2012 Irish team which reached, courtesy of Jason Quigley and Hughie Myers, two European U/22 deciders in Russia.

IABA President Dominic O’Rourke and team managers Anna Moore and Paddy Osborne hailed both performances.

“Amy and Aoife were outstanding, absolutely. Brilliant performances from both girls and they did everything that was asked of them,” said Dimitry Dimitruk, Ireland’s head coach in Romania.

Earlier today, Gabriel Dossen lost out in his bid for at least bronze.

The Galway southpaw, in against Giorge Kharabadze for a place in the last-four, was on the wrong end of a 4-1 split decision after a close 75kg contest.

The final scores read 30-37,30-37,30-27, 29-28, 28-29 to the Georgian middleweight.

“It wasn’t Gabriel’s day in a very tough bout,” added Dimitruk who is working Ireland’s corner in Targu Jiu with Eoin Pluck, Thomas Murray and Valerie Hamilton

Friday is a rest day at the tournament.

Broadhurst scored an impressive unanimous decision over Turkey’s European Elite bronze medallist Esra Yaldiz today and meets France’s Belinda Limuka for a place in the lightweight final.

O’Rourke is in against Italy’s Carlotta Paoletti in the middleweight division.

Dossen is the first Irish boxer in action Thursday in the male middleweight division versus Georgia’s Giorge Kharabadze.

The Irish female duo are between the ropes in the evening session which begins at 4pm (Irish time). Click here for program.

Dundalk medal-magnet Broadhurst was delighted to post a decision over an AIBA World Elite ranked opponent.

“I just wanted to get that win today as she would have been the toughest, if not one of the toughest, in my weight, she said.

“So to beat her was a big relief and am delighted! I’ve never boxed this French girl before but I know her from over the years.

“She is a good boxer, so I have another tough one on my hands tomorrow.”

Shannon Sweeney bowed out today after a fine performance in the light-fly class.
