BROADHURST INTO SEMI-FINALS AT EUROPEAN U/22s

Amy Broadhurst, pictured, guaranteed herself at least bronze at the European U/22 Championships after earning a unanimous decision over Turkey’s Esra Yildiz in Romania this afternoon.

Broadhurst, a former European Junior and Youth champion, will be aiming to edge a step further toward a unique Continental hat-trick against France’s Belinda Limuka in Thursday’s lightweight semi-final in Targu Jui.

The Dealgan BC southpaw consistently found the target against the European Elite bronze medallist with solid backhands today, particularly in rounds one and two. A right jab, delivered straight down the middle, straightened her AIBA World Elite ranked opponent in the second frame.

Yildiz’s best work developed when she closed down the distance and backed Broadhurst up, but the Dundalk lefty gave as good as she got when they action switched to the ropes.

Shannon Sweeney bowed versus Mari Emi-Todorova. Big performance in all three rounds from the Irish U/22 light-fly champion who asked plenty of questions of the experienced Bulgarian in an open contest.

Ireland is now guaranteed two bronze medals in Targu Jui, as Aoife O’Rourke is also through to the last-four. The medals are our first podium finishes at this level since Jason Quigley and Hughie Myers won gold and silver at the 2012 European U/22 Championships in Russia.

“Amy boxed very well,” said IABA President Dominic O’Rourke. “It was close, as you would expect. The Turkish girl is experienced and has also won won European medals but it was a tremendous performance from Amy.

“Shannon also performed very well today, also against an experienced opponent. She worked very hard in all three rounds.”

Gabriel Dossen is in quarter-final action tomorrow. Aoife O’Rourke, who is also assured of at least bronze in Romania, received a bye into Thursday’s semi-finals versus Carlotta Paoletti of Italy.

DAY 5 SCHEDULE – EUROPEAN U/22s

Gabriel Dossen

Gabriel Dossen will be aiming to get amongst the medals and Amy Broadhurst and Aoife O’Rourke will be planning to upgrade their guaranteed bronze medals in the last-eight and last-four of the European U/22 Championships in Tagru Jiu, Romania tomorrow.

Broadhurst scored an impressive unanimous decision over Turkey’s European Elite bronze medallist Esra Yaldiz today and meets France’s Belinda Limuka for a place in the lightweight final.

O’Rourke is in against Italy’s Carlotta Paoletti in the middleweight class.

Dossen is the first Irish boxer in action Thursday in the male middleweight division versus Georgia’s Giorge Kharabadze.

The Irish female duo are between the ropes in the evening session which begins at 4pm (Irish time). Click here for program.

Dundalk medal-magnet Broadhurst was delighted to post today’s decision over an AIBA World Elite ranked opponent.

“I  just wanted to get that win today as she would have been the toughest, if not  one of the toughest, in my weight, she said.

“So to beat her was a big relief and am delighted! I’ve never boxed this French girl before but I know her from over the years.

“She  is a good boxer, so I have another tough one on my hands tomorrow.”

Shannon Sweeney produced a massive performance earlier today but lost out at the last-eight stage.

EUROPEAN U/22 CHAMPIONSHIPS – DAY 4 SCHEDULE

Ireland at opening ceremony

Ireland will be aiming to finish amongst the medals at the European U/22 Men’s and Women’s Championships in Turgu Jiu, Romania tomorrow.

Shannon Sweeney and Amy Broadhurst are one victory each away from at least bronze in the light-fly and light quarter-finals.

Sweeney is in against Bulgaria’s Mari-Emi Todorova at approximately 1 pm (Irish time) and Broadhurst meets Turkey’s Esra Yaldiz about an hour later.

Yaldiz was beaten in the 2015 European Youth 60kg final in Hungary by Italy’s Rio 2016 Olympian Irma Testa on the same day that Broadhurst won 57kg European Youth gold.

Meantime, earlier today in Romania, Gabriel Dossen advanced but Jordan Moore bowed out. Impressive performances from the Irish pair with both men winning two rounds each on the official and unofficial scorecards.

DOSSEN ADVANCES AT EURO U/22S BUT MOORE BOWS OUT

Galway middleweight Gabriel Dossen moved to within one win of at least bronze after seeing off the challenge of Hambardzum Hakobya at the European U/22 Championships in Romania today.

But Irish captain Jordan Moore bowed out despite a top class performance against Romania’s Eusebi Jitaru in the bantam class.

Dossen’s slick counter-punching and jab took the first round against the durable Armenian. The second frame was untidy, but the Irish champion returned to his boxing to take the third and a 4-1 victory.

He’ll now meet Georgia’s Giorge Kharabadze, who was beaten by Ireland’s John Joyce in the last-four of the 2014 European Youths in Zagreb, on Thursday.

Moore boxed well in all three rounds of today’s encounter with the defending bantamweight champion, the Dubliner repeatedly clipping his aggressive opponent with single shots and combinations throughout, but Jitaru, whose best work was from close range, was awarded a unanimous decision.

Amy Broadhurst and Shannon Sweeney (to be confirmed) are in action tomorrow.

WARD TOPS LIGHT-HEAVY TABLE IN WSB

Ward versus La Cruz – 2017 81kg World final

Ireland’s Joe Ward, Cuba’s Julio La Cruz and France’s Bakary Diabra occupy the top three positions in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) Individual light-heavyweight rankings.

The trio have won two fights each this season.

Ward, lining out for the British Lionhearts, is in No. 1 position after wins over Damir Plantic of the Croatian Knights and Bulgaria’s Blagoy Naydenov of Italia Thunder.

The Westmeath southpaw earned unanimous decisions in both bouts and has yet to drop a round in ten frames of boxing this term.

His next outing for the Lionhearts will be a top of the table clash with the French Fighting Roosters in Newport, Wales on April 14.

Les Bleus are in pole position in Group B, two points ahead of the Lionhearts after four matches apiece.

The 2018 WSB season is a qualifier for the 2019 World Elite Championships. The 2019 WSB season will act as a qualifier for Tokyo 2020.
