2 gold, 1 silver & 4 bronze for Ireland at the European School Championships

Ireland will return from Banja Luca and the 2024 European School Championship with 7 medals: 2 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze, following today’s finals.

Thirty nations has participated in these championships: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, England, Estonia, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey. There are 363 boxers in the tournament: 363 boys and 240 girls.

46kg Aleigha Murphy contested her final against Poland’s Amelia Urban, and battled bravely. She comes home with valuable rounds in the bank, and a coveted silver medal, after the 5-0 decision went to her opponent. 57kg Ruth Dossen, a second time campaigner at the championships following her 2023 outing, contested Jovana Damjanovic of Serbia in a tight bout. It ended in a split decision for the Ireland boxer, who comes home with gold. 70kg Dominic Barrett took on Poland’s Natan Styczek in a high-tempo high physicality bout – this was another close contest, and Dominic has been crowned champion of Europe on a split decision.

4 boxers were awarded their bronze medals today: 38kg Kayla Harris, 44kg Alannah Murphy, 54kg Vanessa Doyle and 64kg Robin O’Reilly.

This is the 21st iteration of the championship. The first Europeans, for male boxers 13 and 14 years old, was held in Rome, Italy in 2003. The most successful team was Turkey, who went home with six gold medals. Second place went to Russia, with three champions, while Ireland, Italy, Azerbaijan and England had one gold medal each. The first EUBC Schoolgirls European Boxing Championships was held in Albena, Bulgaria in 2018. Fifteen years after the inaugural Schoolboys Championships, 12 girls were crowned European Champions.

Team Managers Stephen Connolly and Jennifer O’Sullivan Coffey would like to thank the club coaches of each member of the European School Championship team, their families who took the time to bring these young athletes to and from the National Stadium for preparatory squad training, and the team’s coaches for their sterling work throughout the competition.

The team returns to Dublin Airport at 6pm on Sunday evening.
