OLYMPIC YOUTH SEMI-FINAL RESULTS

Dearbhla Rooney will meet New Zealand’s Te Edmonds in a box-off for bronze at the Olympic Youths in Buenos Aires on Wednesday night.

The Leitrim feather, aiming for a place in the finals and at least silver, was beaten on a 4-1 split decision by Thailand’s Panpatchara Somnuek in tonight’s 57kg semi-final over three rounds.

Dean Clancy, pictured above, lost his bid to reach the 52kg decider in the Argentine capital today.

The Sligo flyweight was beaten on a unanimous decision by England’s Ivan Price in the last four of the tournament after three close rounds.

Clancy will now meet Brazil’s World Youth bronze medallist Luiz de Olivera in a box-off for bronze tomorrow.

“I thought I dominated the whole fight to be honest with you,” said Clancy after today’s reversal.

The first round I got the win, the second round I started bad, but I finished well and thought I would have got it. The third one I thought I had nicked it as well. I don’t know what they’re seeing with unanimous decision.”

The Rooney versus Somnuek bout was a repeat of the 2018 World Youth clash which the Thai won on a 3-2 split in Hungary in August.

“I’m disappointed with the result, I thought I had the decision, I thought I did enough there, said Rooney.

“I’ll have a look at the score after, but I don’t know, to be honest I’ll have to look over it. I’m just very disappointed now. I met her in the worlds – she beat me in the prelim by a split decision, I’ll have to look over it now to see where it all went wrong.

“I’m not used to boxing boxers with a style like that. My style is usually the more aggressive one, pushing them back, whereas she has a very aggressive style of boxing herself, pulling forward all the time. I thought I did enough with hooks and jabbing.”
