3 wins for Team Ireland on Day Five of the World Youth Championships.

Team Ireland secured 3 wins on the fifth day of action at the World Youth Championships in La Nucia, Spain.

48kg Georgia McGovern begianproceedings against the Domican Republic’s Novoanny Franciso Nunez in bout 2 of Ring A’s morning session. Georgia leaves the tournament following a round one RSC. Middleweight TJ King returned to the ring in Bout 11, against home boxer Juan Ramon Larrosa Inza, and wins forward to the next round by way of a 4-1 split decision.

In the afternoon session, 50kg Caoimhe Kinsella faced Japan’s Juni Tonegawa in Ring A’s bout 4, and came out the wrong side of a 4-1 split decision, scored 29:28, 29:28, 28:29, 29:28, 30:27. Over in Ring B, bantamweight Gavin Ryan mets Kazakhstan’s Zhandaulet Sarsbenayve in bout 7. Gavin claimed his second win of the tournament with a 4-1 split. The judges scores the bout 28:29, 28:29, 27:30, 27:30, 29:28.

In Ring B’s evening session, bantamweight Shakira Donoghue met England’s Jayne Bardauskas in bout 2 – she leaves the tournment following a a second round RSC. In bout 10, Team Co-Captain Jim Donovan returned to the ring for the second time for his welterweight bout against Serbia’s Uros Cingelic, which he claimed via 5-0 decision.

Day Six

6 Team Ireland boxers will contest bouts on Sunday

Heavyweight, David McDonagh takes on Uzbekistan’s Aynazar Kenesbaev in bout 11 of Ring A’s morning session. In Ring B, featherweight Rebecca Kavanagh opens proceedings against Japan’s Aki Yamazaki.

In Ring B’s afternoon session, flyweight Esther Lambe meets India’s Satyajit Devika Ghorpade in bout 5; while in bout 7, welterweight Gabrielle Mongan takes on Venuzuela’s Juliannys Nazare Alvarez Franco.

In Ring A’s evening session, featherweight Roy Farrelly is back in action for this third contest, against Uzbekistan’s Bakhtiyor Asadov in bout 4. In bout 5, clubmate, lightweight Lee McEvoy takes on Cuba’s Pol Liexter Cantero.
