7 Team Ireland boxers through to Women’s European Championship Quarter Finals.

7 Team Ireland boxers are through to their respective Women’s European Championship quarter finals, and are now one win away from a podium finish.

Day Three of the tournament took place today in Budva, Montenegro, and four Irish boxers were in action.

First up was reigning European U22 champion, Niamh Fay, who met Ukraine’s Anastasiia Kovalchuk. Niamh boxed valiantly, but the 4-0 decision went to her opponent. The judges scored the bout 30:26, 29:27 30:26, 29:27, 28:28.

Olympian, 75kg Aoife O’Rourke, took to the ring directly after that bout, contesting against Greece’s Vasilike Stavridou – Aoife was dominant from the first bell and claimed the 5-0 win, 24:30, 25:30, 24:30
25:30, 26:30. . Aoife will meet Turkey’s Busra Isildar in Wednesday’s evening session.

World Champion, Amy Broadhurst, made her tournament debut in the evening session against Sema Caliskan of Turkey and won through to contest Tuesday’s quarter final, following a 5-0 decision. The judges scored the bout 24:30, 25:30, 24:30, 25:30, 26:30.

70kg Christina Desmond was the final Team Ireland boxers between the ropes today, against Ukraine’s Maryna Malovana – Tina claimed the UD win (27:30, 27:30, 27:30, 26:30, 27:30) and is next in action on Tuesday. She boxes Sweden’s Hanna Ingrid Malena Hede in the evening session

They join 52kg Carly McNaul, who boxes her Quarter Final on Tuesday, Olympian and Commonwealth Games champion, 57kg Micheala Walsh, reigning lightweight Olympic champion, Kellie Harrington, and welterweight, Kaci Rock. Kaci has a preliminaries bye and begins her competition in the Quarter Finals, against Germany on Wednesday.

48kg Shannon Sweeney boxes for a place in the Quarter Final in Monday’s afternoon session, where she’ll meet Gayane Ter-Bargseghyan Armenia in bout two. Light fly, Caitlin Fryers, contests for a place in her weight’s QF against England’s Savannah Alifia Stubley in the evening session’s openning bout.
