Irish boxing experienced mixed fortunes in two pulsating semi-finals at the Pavlyukov Youth Memorial in  Anapa, Russia this morning.
Kieran Molloy advanced but Michael Nevin bowed out at the last four-stage by the banks of the Black Sea.
Molloy, an AIBA World Junior bronze medallist, beat Danis Gabdrafikov on a split decision to record his second win over a Russian opponent in Anapa this week.
The Galway ace will be aiming to upgrade his silver medal to gold versus  a Cuban light-welter (name to be confirmed shortly) in Wednesday’s 64kg final.
Nevin, the current European Youth champion, lost to Kazakhstan’s Oleg Matveychuk, the current Asian champion, in what Irish coach Billy McClean described as a high quality bout. Final scores read 29-28 to the Kazakh across the board.
International Youth boxing is building up toward the AIBA World Youth Championships in St Petersburg, Russia in November.
Team Ireland, who have been in training camp and competition in Anapa for two weeks, are due to arrive home via Dublin Airport on Wednesday evening at 9:10 pm (T2)

MOLLOY AND NEVIN INTO S/FINALS IN ANAPA

Irish squad and staff in Anapa

Irish squad and staff in Anapa

Kieran Molloy and Michael Nevin showed their class to guarantee Ireland at least two bronze medals at the Pavlyukov Youth Memorial in Anapa, Russia today.

Both young men dominated en route to unanimous decisions over Russian opponents in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

But Aaron McKenna and Paddy Donovan were adjudged to have lost on two controversial split decisions to Russia’s Denis Darilov and Artem Butaev.

In both contests, the two home judges scored it 29-28, 29-28 to the home boxers, but the third judge in both bouts, a non home judge, scored all three rounds 30-27 to McKenna and Donovan.

Irish team manager Gerry O’Mahony and Irish coaches Billy McClean and Fergal McKenna articulated their opinions on the verdicts to the officials in charge in no uncertain terms.

McClean described both decisions as shocking and dreadful, adding that McKenna and Donovan were clear winners.

Kevin Kehoe bowed out this morning after a performance full of heart and courage against talented Cuban Lenar Perez-Fransua in the middleweight class.

James McGivern and Brian Kennedy also left everything in the ring against Kazakhstan and Russia. Kennedy was edged on a split by Russian light-heavy Sergey Murashey.

Molloy and Nevin will be back between the ropes tomorrow boxing for places in the light-welter and welter finals.

IRISH TRIO IMPRESS IN BUNDESLIGA

Adam Nolan, James Cleary and George Bates with Irish coach Dmitri Dimitruc in Germany

George Bates and James Cleary won in the Bundesliga in Germany tonight.

The Dublin and Galway duo recorded impressive victories over Polish lightweight Radomir Ubrudnik and Hungarian light-welter Victor Galos.

Gales took a standing count after being dropped by a body shot from Bates.

London 2012 Olympian Adam Nolan lost on a split to former European champion Balazs Bacskai of Hungary in the 69kg class.

The Bray BC southpaw, who celebrated his 29th birthday yesterday, was in line for victory against the Maygar who claimed gold the same day that Paddy Barnes and Darren O’Neill won gold and silver at the 2010 European Elites at the Ice Palace in Moscow.

But a harsh public warning mid-way through the third cost him the verdict.

“That was my first fights since the Seniors, said the five-time Irish Elite champion.

“I had a good first and stood with him in the second. To tell the truth the warning probably cost me the fight. It was very harsh, about a minute and a half to go. I didn’t even receive a caution for dropping the shoulder before it.”

Bates, Cleary and Nolan were representing BSK Hannover Seeize in the Bundesliga this evening.

Irish coach Dmitry Dimitruk was working the Irish corners.

He said: “The crowd were very excited by the performances of the Irish boxers. George, James and Adam got a lot of applause. All were very good, excellent performances.”
