Irish lightweight Amy Broadhurst progressed to the last 16 of the World Elites on a unanimous decision over Germany’s Maya Kleinhans in Ulan-Ude, Siberia.
Final scores – 30-27,29-28,29-28,29-28,29-28 to Broadhurst.
Broadhurst’s backhand was the key to victory in today’s all southpaw battle versus the tall and rangy German, with the Irish European U/22 champion finding the target with the more solid punches in all three rounds of a tight and tactical contest.
The victory sees Broadhurst join Ceire Smith, Michaela Walsh and Christina Desmond in the last 16 and maintains Ireland’s unbeaten start to the tournament after four bouts.
Broadhurst, who was congratulated by German coach Eddie Bolger who was working Kleinhans’ corner today, will meet Poland’s former World Youth champion Aneta Rygielska on Wednesday for a place in the quarter-finals.
No Irish boxers are in action tomorrow.
Smith and Walsh meet North Korean flyweight Mi Choi Pang, the No. 1 seed in Ulan-Ude, and Russian feather Liudmila Vorontsova on Tuesday.
Broadhurst and Desmond are between the ropes on Wednesday.
